Destiny not Mercy:The Glory of One

Book Proposal:
"Destiny not Mercy" sees the world as a reality that should not be nurtured, for it is nature that confuses us about our relationships and choices before and after reason makes itself known. Unlike love, enmity is new to science because it exists in meaning but has no truth or ethic to confront morality based on the goal of proper instruction, which inherently carries balance for and of itself. For example, a prostitute will rationalize her behavior from her experiences of being unloved as a child, and society will reinforce a negative belief in identity by advertising a promiscuous lifestyle and experiential audacity that often appears conflicted within the living production existing in media. The pimp will intuitively and often mistakenly see this as an opportunity to protect her self-concept and coquettish image by perfecting love indirectly to imagination: this behavior process relinquishes his loyalty to truth in exchange for an active economic ideal or critic as well as the presumption of a probative market;so while the prostitute then becomes confused over seduction, the power itself fades away. This fact is an imaginary hope that only Barack Obama can say yes we can to an honorable opinion, individually eloquent and universally articulated in the belief of the persuasive, but a paradoxical story most definitely; written and retold in "The 48 Laws of Power,"a book by notable author Robert Greene who writes in the third person, as if the 'second and first' person doesn't [exists.] This is the style, which is based on honesty. The pattern, which is based on mystery. Theses are the two dynamic paths that solves the dilemma that a prostitute and a pimp must face in order to get out of the game. These two paths sees the image but never becomes one with it, for the invention is limited to expression. However, these paths are divided but consuming; they meet at difference. One might say critical reflection. I argue, finally, that maintaining such a secret relationship starts with intimacy and ends with eternal reality. That is power, from and to the imagery; the reality of the difference is love and imagination, the difference of reality is what I have called the reality of difference that exists without imagination and love. This completes what I will call for now 'The Poetic Absolute' a marriage predestined to disagree about customary enjoyment ,which convincingly demonstrates the absence of doubt attaining

Art History

I would first like to say these paintings were amazing because it lasted through decades and still looked beautiful. These paintings were very well preserved and were actually bigger then I thought. The painting with the woman sitting down and holding a kithara is 73 1/2 x 73 1/2in high. The painting of the wedded couple in the middle of the two paintings is 69 x 76in high. Finally the painting on the right, of a woman holding a shield is 70 x 40 1/4in high. The shapes of these paintings are rectangular and the artist who painted these magnificent paintings used Fresco. There is actually some damage done to these paintings due to the conditions I saw them in. Even thought they lasted through ages there were many cracks and chips on the paintings. The paintings also have lost most of its original coloring because all the colors looked faded to me. Over all though the paintings were in good shape and were probably maintained when they arrived in Metropolitan Museum of Arts.
When comparing the three paintings from the reception hall we see that its depicting some sort of celebration . In our case its depicting a dynastic marriage. On the left painting of the women who is seated playing the kithara is probably an important part of the court because she is wearing a diadem and is sitting on a chair. Kithara was very similar to lyre used in Greek culture and it was an instrument used in that time by the professional musicians. The girl who is standing behind her is probably from the ruling class also due to her age and her outfit. In the center wee see the married couple because the center stage usually depicted the most important. The male is depicted nude because in that age being nude and showing your body was heroic and was part of the Roman culture. The rulers wife is depicted wearing pensive, which was a traditional dress worn by the brides in that time period. The last painting on the right is a woman who is holding a shield is an oracle who depicts the future. Oracle in our case is depicting the future male heir. Her shield had a nude male Hellenistic ruler wearing a white band. These paintings were really important because we saw the same techniques in paintings before and after the date

Wedding Dress For Pregnant Women Complete Collection

Love is on the run as the deliciously wicked Lady Rain devila conspires to rid the world of romance and love. But out of the chaos springs an unlikely hero young schoolgirl named Momoko. Armed with a mysterious ruby ring, Momoko and her two best friends, battle devils, save marriages, and still find time to go to shcool and chase boys!
Know it at http://www.eveallure.com/maternity-wedding-dresses_c6
Junior high girls fight hate filled demons with love while wearing wedding dresses. What could possibly go wrong? For review purposes, and also because I just like it that way, I listened to this series in its English dubbed format. The show is more than 10 years old now, so the sound is fairly basic, but it still strong. Battle sequences are especially well done, with sound flowing well from speaker to speaker. The transfer is very nice, with nearly no aliasing or cross coloration. Blue is the dominant color. The front cover features Angels Peach, Lily and Daisy in their mini skirted battle uniforms (and you got to love the idea of battle uniforms that feature miniskirts) striking poses. The back cover is more of the same, but also showing them in their wedding dresses in the background. Apparently Momoko is the only one who will wear white on her wedding day, which is great news for fans of Yuri and Hinagiku. The front cover of each volume features a picture inside a frame. The first three volumes have one of the Love Angels, the fourth has the three of them, and the final one has the devil Igneus. The back covers use screen caps on a filmstrip, and a blurb to describe the contents. Episode numbers and titles are listed on each volume. The discs themselves use a single pastel color and line art of the love angels. Oddly enough, Yuri is one of them. Episode numbers and titles are listed down the left side of the screen, with character art next to it. She a student at Saint Hanazono Middle School and a member of the newspaper club with her friends Yuri, a statuesque beauty with long flowing hair and a graceful demeanor, and Hinagiku, an energetic girl with short green hair and a tomboyish personality. Their favorite pastime is pining after Yanagiba, the captain of the school soccer team, and dreamboat extraordinaire. Getting in Momoko way is Yosuke, the soccer team goalie and Yanagiba

Teachers play an important role in the life of every student. They are the sources of wisdom and knowledge. They help us to view complicated subjects in a simpler way. Right from the ancient time teachers have been given a lot of respect and gratitude.

My class teacher is Mrs. Kapoor. She teaches us English, Mathematics, Science, EVS and Geography. She makes the subject easier and interesting. She is very sincere in her work.
exceptions of arbitrariness

1.	Introduction:
&#8220;To invent a language arbitrarily without any reason for the choices made, is for the human soul, who needs for everything at least a partial reason, as painful as it is for the body to be tickled to death.&#8221; Herder 1770/1985 p. 85 (transl.D.F.)

What is the term arbitrary refers to? Is there any direct relation between the linguistic form and the linguistic meaning of a word? Why do words differ from language to language? What is onomatopoeic sounds and what is iconic means? Do they arbitrary? Is there any non-arbitrary symbol or word in the world? Do items and concepts, etc. in a language have names that correspond to their very nature (physis), or are the names of concepts and ideas, etc. arbitrary, and dependent upon an agreed upon convention? Does language fall somewhere in between these two positions?

These questions are those with which people deals with from the beginning of the history. In this paper I will try to examine; the meaning of arbitrariness, the view of Ferdinand de Saussure- the father of the modern linguistics- about the issue, the kinds of arbitrariness, the non-arbitrary symbols and words- onomatopoeia and iconic-, and the other non-arbitrary symbols. And I will try to support that the arbitrary feature is not wholly acceptable for all languages and all words in the languages. May main focus language will be English, but as a reference I will use Turkish and German as well as some other languages.

2.	The Arbitrary and Non-arbitrary

2.1.	What is the Term Arbitrariness?
&#8220;Any symbol can be mapped onto any concept (or even onto one of the rules of the grammar). For instance, there is nothing about the Spanish or Portuguese word nada itself that forces Spanish speakers to use it to mean "nothing". That is the meaning all Spanish speakers have memorized for that sound pattern. But for Croatian or Serbian speakers nada means &#8216;hope&#8217;.&#8221;
It is the definition given by the world&#8217;s best known e-encyclopedia, Wikipedia, for arbitrariness. According to the authorities in a university in America, arbitrariness is that &#8220;Form and meaning is not incoherently connected. There is no logic or reason that a hand in the world should be represented by the sound: [hænd]. The words of a language represent a connection between the sounds, which give its form, and a meaning, which those sounds represent. Meaning + Form = SIGN&#8221;

Arab immigrants in france........matter of suffering and integration

Arab immigrants in France……..Matter of Suffering and Integration

In 27th of October, 2005, riots caused by the Arab and Black minorities spread rapidly in France, country of freedom and equality. In one of Paris suburbs, where mostly Arabs live, two teenagers were killed during a police sweep. The wave of riots spread increasingly in the whole country causing great deal of destruction. French citizens saw their cars burned and their national property destroyed. All those sudden events led the French community to ask about the reasons behind all this frustration and violence in such a liberal country like France. Frankly, these riots were not a great surprise for the French authority because many human rights organizations warned France from the discrimination towards the minorities (Matlack). The reasons for Arab Muslims violence and frustration are due to discrimination, poor economic levels, governmental policies, and the Arabs' inability to integrate into the French society.
Discrimination is caused by negative images about Arabs and lack of teaching diversity in school curricula. Dr. Hayttham Manna' pointed out that racism in French society had increased significantly. According to him, the Advisory Committee on Human Rights in France reported that 70% of the French have racist appeals (Memri). This indicates that the French society practices discrimination towards the different minorities and this is due to different reasons. First, there are many negative images which the French have about the Arabs. The first reason which causes this negative image is the religious aspect. Tarek Ramadan assumes that it is wrong to think of religion as the reason behind the violence and frustration. According to him, the French think that religion is the main cause of violence and ignore the other socio-economic dimensions of the problem (Memri). They think that Arab Muslims are terrorists because of their religion. The French society generalizes the violence of some fundamentalists to the whole Arabs and Muslims because the French cannot understand that violence has no specific religion. Negative images are also due to clash of cultures. There are major differences in traditions between the Arabs and the French which create misunderstanding between them. Ali Saad Al-Moussa argues that Arabs carry their culture in their bags when they immigrate to western countries (Memri). Hence, the differences in traditions and ways of thinking make a gap between the minorities and the

…During my sophomore year at high school I was assigned to write an argumentative essay on any topic. I showed the first draft of the essay to my teacher. He read it carefully and then said, "This essay is not what I want.” I felt disappointed and angry at the same time. What’s wrong with my essay? Why didn’t he explain?

I came home and decided to read it again. The first thing that I noticed was the introduction that didn’t catch attention of the readers. My essay was about gender inequalities and employment. I started with describing historical events related to gender issues and illustrating some facts which did not explain the topic of my essay. Therefore, I revised the introductory paragraph of the essay providing striking statistics about progression of gender inequalities for certain job positions. The introduction became interesting to read because the facts in the introductory part of my essay were taken from sources which were difficult to access and not actively "advertised". Because of the uniqueness of the introduction readers were easily involved into the process of reading the essay; their desire was driven by their curiosity in further development of my arguments.

However, my introduction was still not perfect. The next element that I had to revise was my thesis statement. Thesis helps a reader to focus on the main point that a writer is going to prove by his/her essay. It may seem easy because before writing an essay you record your central idea immediately and then collect information and build your writing process in accordance with the main idea. Nevertheless, the thesis statement that you have in your mind may not be persuasive in written form. It is essential to remember that your thesis statement is not a summary of the essay that you were assigned to write. On the contrary, it is your standpoint on the chosen topic. Thus,

The Purpose of Custom Writing

The Purpose of Custom Writing

Have you ever thought why university professors require only custom papers? If your teachers just wanted you to get more knowledge about the subject and learn about various viewpoints they would not ask you to write a custom essay. Copying of someone’s theories would give you enough information about your topic. Custom essays are required because your professors assume that you’ll not simply restate someone’s ideas but, also, analyze them, develop your own point of view and then succeed in discovering new concepts in the future. Therefore, the benefits from ordering custom papers do not only include improvement of grades. Custom essay is the valuable source of innovative ideas which are generated at the highest point of writer’s inspiration.

You may think, “Well, if I order 10-pages report on Wal-Mart performance I don’t need any creative approaches in my paper. I just want it to be written in MLA style in compliance with the outline given by my professor.” Of course, if it’s all that you need a writer will follow your requirements. However, imagine yourself as a university professor who has hundreds of students every semester and gives the same assignment every year only changing the name of the company that students have to analyze. Would you be interested to read hundreds of papers about the same stuff but written in different words? What can make your paper unique in this case? The answer is creativity. Creativity makes your paper different from the papers written by other students and that is the main principle of custom writing.

Someone may think that custom essays are just regular university papers which require only two things such as knowledge of the subject and good writing skills. However, professionalism or vast writing experience do not usually contribute to outstanding results. There are two factors which really matter; those are inspiration and passion for writing. For instance, imagine that you’re an artist. Your artistic personality allows you to interpret separate events which take place in the world and combine them into one unit showing the wholeness and the connection between all processes in nature. While you present your vision of the world in your paintings it’s not enough to be familiar with artistic techniques or with some works of famous artists. Your painting should reflect your thoughts and feelings and send your special message which is hidden behind forms,

Is High performance what every organization aims for? Indeed it is. All companies aim for high performance workers to achieve better goal and higher profits. Companies also know that demographic characteristics and cultural diversity impacts the group’s behavior. One wonders how high performance groups become high-performance teams. And the impact demographic characteristics and cultural diversity has on a group. And finally how demographic characteristics and cultural diversity contribute to or detract from high-performance teams.
High performance is what every organization desires. High performance helps organizations achieve goals and earn higher profits. What makes a high-performance group into a high-performance team? High-performance group is every individual in the group performing good. Nevertheless if a high-performance individual performance good in a group, necessarily does not mean the individual will performer good in a team environment. A high-performance team should have increased productivity, better quality, shortened response time, and lower costs. The group should work as a team to control their day to day production, quality, and administrative duties. A high-performance team should have performance characteristics that include: participative leadership, responsive, aligned on purpose, communicative, task focused, problem solving, shared responsibility, and innovative. High-performance teams must be self directed, integrated production technologies, and organized. To build a high-performance team the group must focus on trust, confidence, and group work skills, balancing and fine tuning the team process as its goes on. (American Management Association) According to today's competitive business environment demands increased productivity, better quality, shortened response time, and lower costs. Many corporations have achieved success by replacing the hierarchical boss-subordinate relationship with that of an empowered work team. (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi) Many corporations know the value of a high-performance team. A high-performance team has a lot to offer to the organization. In a team environment, people are not managed, controlled or supervised. They are led by their mutual vision of the organization's purpose and goals. Teams out-perform individuals acting alone, especially when performance requires multiple skills, judgments, and experience. (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi)
Demographic characteristics and cultural diversity impacts the group’s behavior greatly. Some demographic characteristics and cultural diversity are: ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, religion, geographical differences, occupation, differences in skills and abilities, personal traits, value and attitude differences. And cultural diversity impacts the group if all group members are from different contraries. The group or team will have different views and core values coming from a diver cultures.
How do you think the Elizabethan Audience would have reacted to Othello's and Desdemona's marriage?

HOW DO YOU THINK THE ELIZABETHAN AUDIENCE WOULD HAVE REACTED TO OTHELLO’S AND DESDEMONA’S MARRIAGE?

The English Renaissance saw the rise of one of the most hailed writers in the literary history: William Shakespeare. His works clearly reveal his keen interest in man’s affairs, of which he combined with two distinct characteristics of the Renaissance: a respect for classical learning with a boldness of experimentation. This effect is evident especially in his play “Othello”, as he depicts Othello – the stereotyped lascivious black man – passionately married to Desdemona – the white nobleman’s pure and vulnerable, daughter.

Religious tension which was rampant in England during this period, and the historical ‘public’ context in which it was written, would have contributed to a very negative reaction by the audience to the marriage. Venice was a powerful influential and extremely self confident state, and they saw themselves as a leader in the conflict between civilized Christianity (Venetians) and barbarism (Turks). Even though they were aware of Othello’s Christianity from the start, it is inevitable that they should naturally associate him with his Muslim ancestors, the Turks, by his black skin. However, the single assumption that the whole of the contemporary audience would have been horrified by the marriage because of Othello’s black skin is oversimplified. After all, this was the time of the English Renaissance, when people were becoming more open minded, with the help of the printing press, combined with travels and the books travelers wrote, preventing Englishmen from being narrow minded and provincial.

But then again, it did not help that mixed marriages were a rare occurrence, as at that time black people were mostly slaves. Therefore, the Elizabethan Audience would also have naturally associated his black skin with slavery. It would have been somewhat mortifying; especially for the conservative groups, to watch a passionate exchange between Desdemona, portrayed as a white nobleman’s daughter:

“a maiden never bold, / of spirit so still and quiet that her motion/ Blushed at herself”,

and Othello, portrayed as lascivious black man often referred to as ‘barbarian’, ‘thick-lips’ and ‘moor’. This tension reaches to a height when Iago describes a particularly graphic picture of the couple to Desdemona’s father – Brabantio - by the words; “the old black ram (that)/ Is tupping your white ewe”(act one/scene one), ‘black’ and ‘white’ has double innuendoes of evil and good as well as racial differences. The audience gets the

As my parents drove me away from 8th grade graduation I always felt that High school would relinquish all the drama that I went through in Junior High. Well here I am, entering my junior year and getting over the stress of making the Varsity volleyball team. Just when I thought that I was starting off on the right foot, I turn around and the only foot that I feel is the one kicking me in the gut (courtesy of my best friends). The school bell rings like its the end of an unexpected first round snapping us both back to reality. As we separate and go to our first period classes I feel as though I took one below the belt. I need help, I need a referee. Now, as I cautiously sit in the counselors office thinking to myself, "Am I just going to make matters worse with my friends?" "Can the whispers among the upper classmen possibly be true?" There is this disease that is talked about, it comes around a couple times in your life and I barely escaped its wrath in Junior High. Well now its back to claim any sanity that I had left for this year. The disease if you're wondering, is known as "Pre-graduation Separation" a type of deep emotional growing pain. The first attack showed up leaving my heart in a state of numbness, as though it was being held captive in shackles of cold steel.
Like a piranha's insatiable appetite slowly picking away at its prey's flesh so does the disease eat away at the core of ones friendship. Then the once polite conversations are followed by meaningless confrontations. It's as if the disease grows with each encounter, slowly breaking down all immunity within that friendship. Next, by attacking your mouth the disease makes your tongue a weapon of mass destruction, disabling you from taking back the words of poison that now flow through the veins. Intervention at this time will not work and the disease grows stronger as the friendship weakens and breaks down. The school bell rings again and round three is finally over, I can relish in only a short break from all this unnecessary banter. Abstract

While the debate on benefits of bilingual education in the United States has continued

and different programs to improve bilingual education have been developed, the two-way

immersion program may be the most effective, in terms of English achievement. The

two-way model promotes achievement both academically and linguistically for both

language majority and minority students in the same classroom. This model has been

Receiving attention among educators and will be the subject of this review of bilingual

education

Chapter II Literature Review
Background
With Hispanics making up more than fifty percent of the language minority
population of the United States (cited in Winster, Diaz, Espinosa, & Rodriguez, 1999),
Spanish remains the most prevalent target language in U.S. bilingual programs {Christian,
1996). There are more than thirty million language minority individuals that reside in
the United States, with an estimated projection of forty million by the end of the century
(Fitzgerald, 1993). Christian (1996) indicates that there is a growing concern for the
target language maintenance and development. With English being as powerful and
dominant as it is, the minority language is fighting for its very survival especially with
adolescent students. The students must negotiate between their bilingual system and
other complex systems such as peer interactions, self-esteem, and the education system
itself as a whole to keep the minority language alive (Soto, 1992).
Societal attitudes towards two languages by native English speakers are attributed to
the lack of progress in Spanish (Graham & Brown, 1996). The debate about the benefits
of bilingual education in the United States has continued for more than twenty years
During this time the focus has been to help those students identified as being L.E.P. or
limited in English proficiency by obtaining the best programs that will help them succeed
in school (Medina & Escamilla, 1994 ). One of the major sources of controversy in the
field of bilingual education is when to move students into English-language instruction
( Gersten & Woodward, 1995 ), and which types of programs with which types of children
are most effective in facilitating English language acquisition and/or native language
maintenance (August & Hakusta, 1997; Garcia et al, 1995; Hakusta & Gould. 1987;

What!

I was incredibly shocked just the other day. With all these diseases flashing themselves in our faces, you would think one ought to be more than just being careful. What saddens me is how people do not take into account the proverb, “Prevention is better than cure”.

The other day when I was in the bank, two guys came up and stood behind me. I know it was none of my business but I could not help but listen to them conversant. To tell you the truth, I was really balled over. TK, the one with the shorter hair went on rambling about how he was at the party that his other companion, Logik did not attend. Apparently, these two had placed a bet on who was going to be the first to get a girl named Anna into bed. I felt degraded, like I was nothing. Anyways, the story continues. Neither TK nor any other guy at the party managed to sleep with Anna. This time around I was like you go girl tell them like it is!
However, TK spoke about how he managed to convince two other girls into sleeping with him. He went on about how he managed to score twice in one night and the fact that he didn’t even know the names of the girls or who they were or what made them tick. So im standing there, awfully embarrassed and thinking to myself why? Here is a guy, who does not even show any emotion of regret or feeling a little bit insecure because he slept with two people he did not even know! I must say TK was really drop dead gorgeous! He was the whole package and he knew it.

Why am I telling you this incident? Well you see, besides the fact that AIDS is out there and many other diseases, people still need to learn more about it. Obviously with TK and Logik, sex to them is like drinking water. It is a must have whether thirsty or not.

I had a friend who sent me an e-mail telling me that not all good-looking guys (Will Smith) are cheats and players (Eric Bennet). I agree to disagree. Here was TK right in front of me looking all good and delicious but the moment he opened his mouth, he became one of the most ugly individuals I know. So sometimes abo

Key Women’s Issues: Pregnancy Discrimination, Pay Equity, and the Glass Ceiling

The Glass Ceiling

The glass ceiling starts to form itself very early on. From the moment a woman enters the work force after college, she is faced with much discrimination and unjust belief that she will not be able to do as well of a job than a man. A man and a woman, who both have the same education and training for a job, will have a considerable gap in their yearly income. In a first year job, a man will make approximately $14,619 compared to a woman who will make only $12,201. That is a pay gap of 17 % there is no reason why there should be any gap in their incomes during the first year of their jobs. They have both had the same formal education and both have the same qualifications necessary for the job, yet they are being treated unequally. The woman has not shown herself to be incapable of accomplishing her job and has given her employer no reason to doubt her commitment to her career other than the simple fact that she is a woman. And this discrimination does not go away. After five years of constant working, at the same rate and level as each other, the pay gap actually increases. A male will get paid an average of $28,119 while a female only receives $22,851.This is how things have been done for years. The man typically gets paid more money and holds more executive jobs than women do, simply because they are males. A man will be paid an average of 47% more than females in the course of their lives. Although this is wrong, this has been tradition for so long; both men and women have accepted this way of thinking as right and have just gone along with it.

There have been changes in regards to women in top positions within the last few years. However, although those advances are positive, they are still no where equal. A certain statistic may say that there has been a 14% increase in the number of women in executive jobs for a certain company. However, although that increase is no doubt positive, it fails to tell the true story. That increase is only increases from a very minute number, if not zero, of women who previously held that position.

Their Eyes Were Watching God

Janie's entire life is one of a journey. She lives through a grandmother, three husbands, and innumerable friends. Throughout is all, she grows closer and closer to her ideals about love and how to live one's life

Janie's life begins under the watchful eye of her grandmother. Her grandmother has given up her own happiness to raise Janie and her mother. Right away, it is obvious that Janie's life is going to be different than her grandmother's. For starters, Janie has very different ideas about love than any other character. She may not be able to clearly define her thoughts. The first glimpse into the past involves Janie underneath a pear tree, watching the flowers bloom.

Janie's grandmother is old and weak. She never had a person in her life that cared for her and truly wanted to look out for her well-being. As a result, she is frightened by Janie's refusal to follow the mold, her refusal to marry Logan for convenience instead of love. Janie learns a very important lesson from her grandmother. Not a lesson to emulate, but not even confidence is enough in ones own ability to be strong with adversity She does not want to be like her grandmother. She is young and beautiful and knows what she is longing for in her life.

She does not get what she wants with Logan Killicks, her first husband. Janie married Logan because her grandmother wanted her to. Her grandmother could not understand why she did not love him, as he had sixty acres of land. Janie did not love him. She cannot get her perfect vision of love out of her mind. Logan makes her do menial chores around the house, and treats her like a beast of burden.

She thinks that her prayers are answered when she first sees Joe Starks. In fact, she first sees him through a veil of her hair, and it is her long, luxurious hair that he is first attracted to. She decides to marry Joe instead. She thinks that he represents the romantic ideal that she has been searching for.

Soon, however, Janie sees that while Joe loves her beauty, he does not even see anything else that she has to offer. When people ask her to make a speech, he cuts her off. He views her as an ornament, nothing else, and he makes her bind her hair

HAS COLLEGE MADE YOU A BETTER PERSON
College really made my life better more than I never though it would .Now looking back I can see why college is the best place to make people’s life enhanced. The education that I got out my college classes made me a logical thinker. By reading the book and paying a close attention to college instructors my life become better in a priceless way. I came not to stereotype people other than to know them individually.
I started to become a logical thinker. Since I started going to school I came not to think how my way of thinking always is not right. I came to see people’s idea despite it is right or wrong I rather tried to broaden my prespective from it. College made me decide to includes peoples perspective in my life. By doing this my life become different. I no more tried to tell myself how I was the only person who has the right perspective when it come to different matters like which culture is right and which is wrong or which religon is better. College helped me just to understand different perspective about peoples culture, religion an matters of that kind. But finally I knew I had the freedom either to agree with the idea or to disagree with it as long as I keep it to myself.
Furthermore, reading books and paying a close attention to my instructors taught me in college made me become a much improved person. When I read books about people’s culture, religion, good and bad situations that they went through I came to compare my life with them and this made me become a developed person. When I begun spending a lot amount of time by reading books I came to gain knowledge that I otherwise would gotten if I did not open books and read it. Reading books became the best way to change how I was living my life and still will live in my future. Also, my instructors are the most important part that transform being to turn out to be better. Every time when I am focused and listen to every word they taught me at college it was one of the important parts that made me a better person.
macbeth

In this essay I will explore and explain one of William Shakespeare's tragically play Macbeth. In this aspect is that of the three Weird Sisters. These three” secret black, and midnight hags" (Mac IV.i 47), hardly noticeable as humans, serve a huge dramatic function in the play. Closely looking at Macbeth, one can distinguish the many functions that they serve in the play. The role of the three Weird Sisters in the play Macbeth is to generate imagery, mood, and atmosphere and to serve as the equivocation that will bring Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, to his downfall.
The witches are a powerful influence on Macbeth because they are, in part, responsible for his decision to kill Duncan. Through their predictions they have filled Macbeth with the desire for the throne of Scotland. But, in the final analysis, the witches do very little to influence Macbeth to commit the murder of the king, Banquo, and the others. Macbeth's own inner evil and desire for ambition, coupled with the pressure placed on him by Lady Macbeth to kill the king, are really the factors that most strongly influenced Macbeth. The belief in the existence and power of witches was widely believed in Shakespeare's day, as demonstrated by the European witch craze, during which an estimated nine million women were put to death for being apparent as witches. The practice of witchcraft was seen to subvert the established order of religion and society, and hence was not tolerated. Witch hunting was a respectable, moral, and highly intellectual pursuit through much of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. The belief of the majority during the seventeenth century suggests that the witches are powerful figures who can exercise great power over Macbeth; however, strong arguments to the contrary were in existence at the same time. The intensity of the tragedy is dependent on whether the witches are perceived to be able to control the otherwise innocent Macbeth's actions, or if he is entirely responsible for his own downfall. The main type of weather found throughout the play is thunder and lightning storms, which occur when evil deeds are either being formulated or carried out. I first saw this theatrical use of weather when we meet the three witches in Act 1, scene 1. Whether Shakespeare included stage directions for storms is debatable, but the lines of the play suggest the kind

Direct Instruction

            Direct Instruction
The efficient way for teachers to teach students is to present information, skills, or concept of Direct Instruction. Direct Instruction refers to a rigorously developed, highly scripted method for teaching that is fast-paced and provides constant interaction between students and the teacher.” (Effective Teaching Methods) Direct Instruction is a research basic module used to help students to set clear goals and understand them. The student will have a clear and concise explanation of the subject. Engelmann’s theory of Direct Instruction is research base; this model of instruction is within a large more generic category of teaching directed instruction. In the essay, I will explain the research base of Direct Instruction, what it is, why use it, how it works, what it does, and what researches say about it. The purpose of Direct Instruction is the curriculums of this project are used.

“Direct Instruction is to describe lessons in which, the teacher transmits information directly to students, lesson is goal oriented and structured by the teacher.”(Educational Psychology) Direct Instruction is a teacher-directed and commonly used during the concept introduction, and a phase of learning cycle. It is also an instructional method and is based on the learning theories of behaviorism and developmentally. The instruction is holistic and used for reading. The program is based on specific student error data from the field test, and scripting the lessons; which allowed sharing of these “polished stones” across teachers. Children learn by working through the sequence of tasks with carefully timed comments from the teacher, said Engelmann.

Direct Instruction is used to describe a lesson to the students. The teacher would lecture, and then he/she guides the students through a complex problem, that is broken down into step. This will help the student to carryout the problem on their own, for an example the teacher would have the students to watch a video and during the project, the students would take notes, and be prepared for a quiz. This gives the teacher control over what is a lecture, and who will learn. These programs assure the teacher incorporates effective teaching behavior into the lesson. This provides children with a high rate of opportunities to participate, interact with peers, and to receive individual attention from the teacher. In addition, these small groups typically become learning communities with shared group and individual goals.

The tranquil evening breeze soothed my soul; the soft howl of the wind comforted my heart. I gazed aimlessly into the abyss of stars above me, in the midst of an island engulfed in the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmines. Between two large palm trees I sat, and, in complete apathy rummaged through my mind for thoughts that would help me to relax. Through a cloudy, blurry image, the sight of my deceased mother flashed before me, and my chest seemed to have collapsed. Familiar lights, sounds and smells dashed back and forth through my mind, too brief to distinguish. However, eight words, said sincerely by mother on her death bed, made it through the flood of thoughts that crowded my head, “Make me proud and don’t follow the crowd.” Tears streamed down my cheeks; it was the first time I had ever remembered something my mother had said.

Puddles formed around my face, my heart thumped furiously and I sobbed uncontrollably. Then, I ceased. My eyes strained open and my tears immediately dissipated. I looked up, staring directly in the eye of God and asked myself, have I fulfilled my mother’s wishes? What have I done to make myself different? What contributions can I make to those around me? Those questions persistently repeated, like a scratched CD in my head. I was determined to find out, was my life indeed ‘different’ and unique? Or, was I just another commoner, a statistic, a laggard?

I dug through my mind, desperate for answers and found myself on that old hill where my dreams had been created and my foundation had been built - high school. Memories replaced the horde of thoughts that filled my mind and I remembered old times that set me apart from others. I recollected the one reason why most classmates and teachers admitted that they respected me - my ambition. As I pondered, my heart was warmed, for, this was one quality that I, myself cherished. I remembered often being laughed at when asked about my future plans. And while that would have been discouraging for others, it only made me want it even more.
Gender Roles in Culture

Gender Differences in Culture

Studying the similarities and differences between the sexes, has had a rather
colorful story. In the old days, the males’’ desire for domination led to some bizarre“
scientific” attempts to show that the male is smarter than the female. One of the claims by
males 100 years ago concerned brain size. Since women have smaller heads that men, their brains must be smaller, so the male scientists said that females were not as bright. The point is that male/female relationships have been dominated even in science rather than by research. There are a lot of differences between a male and female, which prove that no man or woman is the same.
Males are bulkier and stronger as a group compared to females, but females have
fewer genetics defects, live longer, and have greater physical endurance. The female bears the offspring and provides nourishment for the infant, which creates a very strong bond between the two. We usually see aggression as primarily a masculine characteristic, and males do indeed show more aggression those females. According to the movie “Men,
Women and the Sex Difference”, states that boys tend to play ruff games while girls play
with dolls. Girls care more about feelings and they play with each other. John Stossel was
trying to prove that men and women are not the same. He came up with a lot of differences, that makes us girls differ from guys. Girls study faces while men are obsessed with sports.
Girls are more sensitive and guys don’t show their feelings. Women have a better
memory for detail. Men and women use different parts of the brain to think about the
something. Studies have proven that guys tend to have better math skills than girls. Men
have better visual skills; they know how to play with 3-D games. The Brain Sex 2 movie
showed that boys tend to build a 3-D object faster than a girl. A girl tends to take a while
but still gets the same figure. It also showed that girls tend to play with make up while
boys play with balls, sticks, trucks etc. The book states that there have been many studies
and boys are born aggressive while girls are not. Sexist parenting makes the boys more
ruff according to John Stossel. He

Throughout my life, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many people who have helped mold me into the person I am today. But there’s one person who I know I couldn’t live without and therefore is the most important person in my life. This person will do anything she can for me, gives me wonderful advice, and has taught me a lot about life. She’s my godmother, Antoinette Wooten (I call her Toni). She’s been apart of my life since I was born, but I really needed her more as I approached my teenage years and withdrew from my mom. Toni understood that I needed her without ever saying it, and have helped change me for the better.

Toni has done numerous things to make me realize that she’ll do anything she can for me. For example, When I was younger, I played basketball with dreams of possibly going professional, until I became injured. The doctor found scarred tissue in both my knees, that’s why it hurt when I ran. When Toni found out I was injured, she surprised me one night, and brought me a huge “Get Well” chocolate chip cookie with a balloon. I really wasn’t expecting anything; just knowing she cared was enough. Toni has done things for me that I am really grateful for. For instance, during my freshman year of high school, I participated in volleyball for the first of two years. At the end of the season my school honored the sport teams with athletic awards, I wasn’t going because I had no one to take me. One night I talked to Toni, she could tell I really wanted to go, so she offered to take me. I was excited and relieved that she would be there to smile and be proud of me. Toni helped boost my spirit and made that one of the most enjoyable nights ever. Toni does anything she can for me without ever asking for anything in return.

I gravitated toward Toni because I can go to her with any problem, and she’ll always tell me the right thing. For example, in my junior year of high school, I took Algebra 2, even though I’m not the best in math. I wasn’t sure if I was going to pass with a “C,” so I thought

Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

In this short novella, Franz Kafka was trying to teach modern society a lesson of a man reduced from human to insect. We are introduced from the very beginning with a man named Gregor Samsa who awakes to find he has become an insect. Gregor is the only provider for his selfish family. His father stopped working and left a debt for Gregor to pay off. The mother is presented as an elderly woman who obeys her husband. The sister Grete, is the only one in the family who talks with Gregor.

Gregor has a very hard life, he is a traveling salesman, dedicated to his job as well as obligated to support his family and their needs of living in an expensive apartment as well as having a maid. Gregor is taken advantage of. Gregor is alienated from his family as well as from humanity. Gregor has no friends or personal relationships. He works long hard hours. When he is at home he is in his room alone.

Gregor has never missed a day’s work but the morning he awakes as an insect he feels ashamed and confused. He is so determined and obligated to his family he forgets about himself and what he has become. After all, it has always been as if his family ignored him. His family sees him as a provider rather than a member. Now after the metamorphosis he is no longer needed. He is treated as if he was nobody, and the family is eager to rid of him. The father throws rotten apples at him and his sister brings him rotten food. The family has no guilty feelings or regrets. Gregor is now useless.

Gregor was not human even before the metamorphosis. He has been alienated from his family, his humanity and his job. He has no life for himself. He has dedicated his life for his family, and for what? They compensate him by showing him he is worthless. Instead of mourning for Gregor the family each seek for their own needs. The father, mother and sister all seem to have found jobs. They moved to an inexpensive apartment and got rid of

Virtue Is Teachable, But Only By Yourself!

Socrates says “virtue is not knowledge because it cannot be taught” and that “virtue is a divine dispensation.” You either have it or you don’t!

I agree that academic learning is not enough to cause virtue because you can find illiterate people in remote places that are virtuous. In addition to its divine element, however, I believe a constant effort is needed to pursue and find virtue.

If I consider the remote possibility that I’m virtuous now when I’m in my forties, I cannot assure myself that I was virtuous when I was eighteen. It would have to be gradually shaped with time and my desire to find it. If I can assume I’m virtuous now, I can attest that it came with a conscious effort in a pursuit to find my true self in life.

My teacher (myself) told me that all you need to do is to build and shape a conscious for yourself that constantly evaluates your behavior with respect to others, and always keeps you on the humble side, no matter how much

Reflection Statement

Reflection Statement
The process by which the completed Major Work was formulated was a complex and, at times, frustrating one, yet the intriguing, rewarding and educative nature of my progress has resulted in finished product in which I am entirely satisfied. My initial idea was explore the way consumerism is causing children to present their sexuality as an image at younger and younger ages. But I could not get my concerns to manifest themselves without being clichéd.
My current, more successful concept was based upon my own personal experiences. My grandmother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, and I have often seen the distress and confusion unfamiliar surroundings and people can cause her. Up until now, I have taken her behaviour very much for granted, but as I have matured in my outlook I have been more affected by the raw emotions that flit across her face when she is fearful and bewildered because she cannot remember where she is or why she is there. She has the vulnerability of a little girl at moments like this, and my observations of this made me seek advice concerning the disease.
I have conducted a great deal of research on Alzheimer’s, both through the Internet and library research. I have also spoken to friends and relatives of victims of the disease, and of course, I have continued to observe my grandmother. Many of the things that she says and does have found their way into my story, as have many of her friends and relatives responses to her illness and behaviour. I realized that the conversations and observations of my grandmother are limited due to her inability to provide foresight, I consulted my grandmother’s doctor for more expert advise, and my grandfather for a more personal insight into living with the disease. While I learned a great deal about the disease, I also found that there are still a lot of unknown factors, such as what the victim sees and hears during moments of dementia.
One of the things I wonder about is whether or not elements of the Alzheimer victims’ lives, that they have suppressed, return to torment them when their ability to suppress unpleasant memories lessens, or is lost completely. Their inability to communicate coherently by the time this would occur prevents researchers from

How does Owen explore the themes of war through the power of his poetry?

How does Owen explore the themes of war through the power of his poetry?

Answer Q
Owen expresses the themes of war through the unique power of poetry. Both the mental and physical brutality of war is emphasised in the poems, “The Send off,” “Anthem for doomed youth” and “Spring Offensive,” furthering the responder’s understanding of a soldier’s life on the western front. Owen employs various poetic devices such as imagery, symbolism and sound techniques, and powerful language features, together helping to convey the different aspects of war, such as the themes of ___ (maybe 4 main themes).

100 words on extract, linking to q

Wilfred Owen’s, “The send-off,” illustrates the consequences of war and reveals its cynical, secretive nature through the use of poetic devices. The title, “The Send-off,” depicts two different images about the nature of war. “Send-off” could be interpreted as a farewell to soldiers, in the hope of their return, or metaphorically could convey their literal fighting till death. The composer’s use of symbolism, “darkening lane,” portrays the sinister side of war, while the alliteration, “grimly gay,” creates irony. This depicts the soldiers’ hidden fear of going into battlefield, compared with their initial excitement at “send-off.” The composer also emphasises the fact that the “typical” send-off is an emotionless, mechanical procedure for many military personal, rather than a cheerful experience.

Owen’s choice of diction is used to convey the horrors and themes of war. The metaphor, “Their breasts were stuck all white with wreath and spray. As men’s are, dead,” reinforces the concept of doom and sacrifice during war, through the onomatopoeia of “stuck” and the negative connotations associated with the word “dead”. Diction is used, “Dull porters watched them, and a casual tramp…staring hard, sorry to miss them…,” to demonstrate that most onlookers have a lack of emotion towards war. The rhetorical question, “Shall they return to beatings of great bells in wild train-loads?,” conveys the uncertainty of war, where a soldier’s fate is unknown to many.

The composer’s use of repetition “A few, a few, too few for drums and yells”, conveys a sense of loneliness, as there are only a handful of soldiers who have returned home, depicting the horrors of the aftermath of war. The composer’s use of imagery, “May creep back, silent…up half-known roads”, portrays the returned soldiers’ disillusioned state of mind, effectively giving the responder an insight into the consequences of war.

Ext English Seminar

Our topic is seminar number three: Examine the pervasiveness of revenge within The Revenger’s Tragedy. Analyse the characters, discussing how their personalities, actions etc. contribute to the final outcome.
Well as an introduction I believe we should first define pervasiveness. Pervasiveness means spread right throughout. In other words the question in asking us to examine how revenge is spread right throughout the society in The Revenger’s Tragedy. Now to do this we must analyse each of the main characters to see how their actions and personalities reflect the pervasiveness of revenge and how they contribute to the final outcome.
Now if we were to look at each character individually, we would find there a numerous overlaps. So instead I am going to look at two of the main ones, Duke and Lussurioso, and through our discussion on these two we will find that many of the other characters fall into place. We can also see how these two main characters, through their actions and personality, influence other characters.
I will begin by talking about the Duke. Now the Duke is the head of this society. The convention of the genre, in which the society in question is particularly discordant, is brought about by the Duke’s blatant disregard for the Law and other humans. He is supposed to represent the justice of the society but rather he is a major cause of the instability in the society. As you will find, the Duke is the cause of many quests for vengeance. The principal one involves Vindice. Vindice’s fiancé, Gloriana, was killed by the Duke as she would not surrender her honour to him.
This causes Vindice to become obsessed revenge and as we see in the play, he goes through anything to gain that revenge. The Duke is the highest order in this society and if he disregard the Law and justice then there is not much hope for the society. Vindice is forced into vengeance as the justice system cannot work under such a situation where the highest power is at fault.
Ironically, the Duke actually makes an attempt at maintaining justice in the case of Junior, the Duchess’ son. Junior, as part of the Royal Family, also has a callous attitude to well-being of others and raped Lord Antonio’s wife. He shows contempt for the Law in his trial, secure in the knowledge that he will

With close reference to the text, explore how Shakespeare presents the character of Prospero in Act

Shakespeare uses the change between blank verse and prose as the most obvious differentiation between the characters in this play. Prospero is a noble character so speaks in blank verse which follows the pattern of iambic pentameter; this is shown most clearly when he is making longer speeches such as in the opening of scene 2, when he and Miranda are speaking. This style of verse is distinguished by the emergence of a soft sound followed by a hard one, repeated five times; Shakespeare occasionally bends this rule to suit the lines of the character, allowing the verse to flow more freely.

The scene begins with a conversation between Prospero and his daughter Miranda, both of whom use blank verse as they are noble characters. This is the first time that the audience have seen Prospero and Miranda, and she is the only female in the play, allowing the audience a change and a break in the midst of many male characters. Her emotions and the use of language which Shakespeare chooses for this character allow the audience to make a clear distinction between the male and female characters. Shakespeare uses many alliterations during Miranda’s speech, reusing a soft ‘S’ sound, this creates the sound of the sea but also sounds like she is sighing, reflecting her unhappy mood.

Shakespeare’s opening line for Prospero is a very authoritative line and instantly allows the audience to see that he is a commanding central character, his direct and almost harsh language draws the audiences attention away from Miranda and towards the character of Prospero. He is first seen to be putting Miranda in check and trying to stop her emotional outburst over her witnessing of the shipwreck, he says that ‘there’s no harm done’, which is the audiences first indication that the shipwreck in the opening scene was not what is seemed. The interaction between Prospero and Miranda allows the audience to understand not only the character of Prospero but also clearly installs the character of Prospero as the father and as a strong male character. He also uses these two characters to help the audience to follow the story as Shakespeare uses them to set the scene and explain what has happened.

By using the characters as narrators, it allows the audience not only to find out how they arrived on the island

Life is a tight rope

“What does the word life really mean to you?” Mr. Davis, my guidance counselor, asked me as I sat fidgeting in the uncomfortable chair beside his faux wood desk. “What do you mean by life?” I responded even though I was quite conscious that it’s illegal to answer a question with a question in literary law. “C’mon Brandon, I know you’re deeper than that, what do you think the meaning of life is? Why are you here on Earth? What are you going to do with yourself?” he immediately spat at me as if he’d been holding it in the whole time I was in there. “What’s life to me?” I asked myself without revealing my thoughts to Mr. Davis’ suspecting eyes. “Life is a tightrope,” I answered and continued,”…you can choose to walk and take the risk of falling into despair and depression or you can just sit down on the platform and watch the dust settle on a life you could’ve had.” “Wow, that was deep,” I said to myself as I congratulated my uncanny ability to invent meaningful answers to the most trying situations. “Could you explain yourself?” It was more of an order than a question but I disregarded the thought quickly and then proceeded in telling him about my newborn philosophy.

I told him everything. I told him how my mom and I used to fight everyday and that’s why I loved going to school so much- I could get away from the pain and sorrow. I shared all the meaningful experiences I had been acquainted with thus far in my life, like my first regatta when my boat took first place. I told him about the time we were vacationing in Sunriver, Oregon playing with my friends and a couple other guys we’d just met there at a rope swing along the Deschutes River. We were having a blast. There was nothing like jumping off the rock and being swung out twenty feet and then right at the exact moment, when you felt that your own momentum couldn’t take you any further or higher, you’d let go and fall for what seemed like an eternity, into the brisk current of the mighty Deschutes. The fun we were having was multiplied ten fold when one of the guys we’d just met hit the tree that the rope was tied to and fell into the water. We

Divorced

“ Don’t you have a father?” a question that I had to oppose with everyday. Ever since I had developed a longing for a father, I had realized that one could not function without the presence of his father. Everyday I had to defy with all the criticisms that my own friends bestowed upon me. However, I knew that I would meet my father some day: the father that I had so longed for.

On January 19, 1994, my flight to America took off at approximately three in the morning. Outside, the sky was still dark. Stars were still shining as bright as ever. I sat in my seat patiently until the plane had landed. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise coming from the speaker saying, “ We have arrived to Sandiego.” Quickly, I took all of my belongings and headed for the entrance. As I walked towards the entrance, my heart began to pound. My heart beat faster every second. My mom, my sister, and I began to look for my father. To get more familiar with his appearance, I took out his picture, held it tightly to my hand, and looked at it every minute and then. Suddenly, a man dressed in black suit and pants walked towards us. He looked so strange but yet somewhat familiar. I looked at my picture one more time, and there he was, my father. Strangely, I did not feel a bond between us. It seemed as if we were two different people. I was hoping to get a hug from him, but he didn’t come. The father that I was longing for was somehow destroyed from my memory at that moment. He did not smile when he saw us, not even said hello.

When we got home, he did not say a word nor tried to develop a relationship with me. It seemed so strange how he kept on leaving every two weeks. While he was gone. My mom, my sister, and I had to stay home. Every night, we had to deal with the loneliness that we built inside us. We sometimes sat in our room praying and crying, hoping that my father would come home for our family to reunite. However, he never did. I soon realized what kind of person my father is. He is the father that doesn’t care about neither his kids nor his family. After

Doraemon - Significance of Icons

There is no doubt that Doraemon is absolutely best-known and a hero as an animation character not only in Japan, but also in other countries. Doraemon was created as a robot, sent to assist a fourth-grade knucklehead named Nobi Nobita from 22nd century, and has captured the hearts and inspired the dreams of children around the world 30 years ago by the author, through comic books, televisions and movies. The author of Doraemon, Fujiko Fujio, passed away in September 1996 and became an award-winning writer later on. Doraemon is still remained as the best superstar in this world and our minds. The secrets of his fame for the Japanese are: history, global activities which Doraemon?fs production company deals with, fascination of the tool from his four-dimensional pocket on his stomach and educational aspects of the stories.

Sales of the Doraemon comic series have been extremely increasing from the beginning, but still. As of December 1999 forty-five volumes of the Doraemon comic series had been published, as well as 19 full-length books, which were the basis for the Doraemon movies. Today, from 1.5 million to 2 million copies are sold each year, and total sales of some 100 million makes the series one of Japan?fs all-time best sellers. There have been 1,700 episodes of the ?gDoraemon?h animated television series, which began in 1979, and 21 ?gDoraemon?h movies have drawn a total audience of close to 63 million. A new film was scheduled to be released in March 2000. Several years ago, a final episode to the Doraemon series was posted on the Internet and caused a huge commotion all over Japan.

The producer of Doraemon always keeps eyes open to the issues of the world, not only Japan. Doraemon has been popular all over the world. The comic series has been published officially in nine languages in 10 coutries and regions, including South Korea, China, Thailand, and Spain.
College Admission Essay

Having your name constantly listed among the heroes Batman and Robin Hood may be a fantasy for many, but to me it is just one of those every day, ordinary things that happens in life. I’m not a skinny guy in green tights (I’m not a guy at all, in fact), and I don’t even have the honor of being an often-overlooked sidekick to a rich and powerful superhero. No, I’m just your ordinary American girl who happens to live in a country where it’s a curse not to be able to roll the letter “r,” especially when your name starts with that letter.

“Excuse me, but what is your name?” is normally the first thing they ask, in their thick Italian accents. That’s when the trouble starts. That’s when I wish I really did know Batman, so he could sweep me off my feet and take me somewhere else, so I didn’t have to go through this again. After the Italian’s opening question, the conversation normally goes something like this:

“Robin.”

“Eh?!”

“My name is Robin.”

“Your name is Wobin?”

“No, mi chiamo Robin.”

“Ti chiami Wobin?”

At this point, I give a tiny, exasperated sigh, and the Italian (normally a guy) will throw a confused glance at his friend standing next to him. His friend will then remove his Oakley sunglasses (even if it’s winter), scratch his head, take a drag of his cigarette, and give a shrug. Then, just like in the cartoons when the coyote has a brilliant idea about how to catch the roadrunner, a light bulb will pop up above one of their head’s, and he’ll say, “Ah! Robin! Like Batman and Robin!” A smug little smile will then cross his friend’s face, and one will say to the other (in Italian), “Hey, I wonder where the Merry Men are!” Now it’s my turn to look smug. They think I’m a tourist. Little do they know that I’m an ex-pat who’s been living here for almost three years, and can understand Italian better than the average American walking through the gray Milan haze. I always do love the surprised look on their faces when I reply in Italian. Then they ask why I speak Italian, and the above conversation is completely forgotten.

If that had been the only thing I had needed to adapt to when I moved here, I would have been happy as a lark. However, that wasn’t exactly the case.

A Good Role Model

It is easy to answer some hard questions such as what does DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) stand for. One who studies in microbiology gets that answer in one second. For some easy questions, where does your character and personality come from? it is hard to answer such easy questions. One needs more time to get the answer. Psychologists may be concerned about one’s childhood period and family environment. The character and personality is under the control of inherited genes but also is influenced by the environment. It is generally believed that the influence came from a family member during the childhood period and would spread to adulthood. To make a good character and personality for children, a family member needs to be a good role model.

The essay “An American Childhood” by Annie Dillard is a good example of how a family member has influence on the children. This essay expresses her idea about her mother when the author looks back at her young age. Children will copy his or her character from the nearest person around them and develop this process until they mature. Family members would be the biggest influence to young children. A young girl imitates her mother and a young boy imitates his father, respectively. From the essay, Dillard said a lot about her mother’s character and emotion in many points. Her mother is a strong and independent woman. The author says, “She was an unstoppable force; she never let go”(210). She means that her mother has strong energy to get something done and she never stops until it is accomplished. Her mother’s character might differ from other ordinary women at the same time in the early 1960’s. Her mother develops the seed of character and personality, which is the great impact and influence on her. For example, her mother questioned her about her assumption that Eisenhower would win the election. “How do you know?”(210) her mother questioned her. She said that everyone says that Eisenhower would win. Her mother asked “Did you ask everyone?”(210); She would definitely say that her mother was a straightforward person who questioned every detail in conversations. She had more and more unusual characteristics such as she persuaded the U.S. Post Office to let her keep her old address forever. The author may have learned not to be critical, but also taught her daughter to be independent and strong.

Someone might consider the influence

CLU Admissions Essay (A New Hope)

Stepping out of the clinic into the broad daylight, tears ran down her face. She had actually done it. She had an abortion. She climbed into the back seat of the family station wagon and listened to the silence. What had she done?

When most girls write about their mothers they talk about how wonderful of a childhood they had being raised by such a great woman. They talk about her accomplishments and how they want to grow up and be just like her. They talk about the soup sick babble that every “perfect” family has to offer. When I write about my mother, I speak of the pain, the fears, the learning and the salvation. My Mother has been a great inspiration to me. She is my hero. Not because of the wonderful things she has done. Not because of the marvelous childhood I was given and certainly not because of her upbringing. My Mother is my hero because she was led down a path of destruction, but with God’s grace and mercy she was pulled from her perils; and blessed.

As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive heath care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.

When she was sixteen my mother met and got pregnant by a boy that she attended school with. Ashamed and spiritually broken she gave into to her parents pleading to have an abortion.

As time passed she grew older and wiser. She graduated high school and began working several jobs. Attending college was never a thought in her mind. She married young and moved on with her life. Eventually she became pregnant again, but his time she was ready. By now God had strengthened her life. She believed in him and sought is will. She had been given a second chance. To this day my mother is a strong and charismatic woman, full of God’s love and joy for life. She is my hero because

Tell us about opinion have you had to defend. How has this affected your belief system?

I chuckle to myself every time I think about this. I am perceived as a mild-mannered, intelligent individual until I mention that I am involved in riflery. It is interesting to watch someone's expression change. It is as if I instantaneously grew a pair of horns and a sharp set of claws. Believe me this gets worst; I am a member of the NRA. I try to tell these folks that I belong to the NRA to fire my rifle. "Oh my God! You fire real guns? with real bullets?!?" they remark with a perplexed look on their face. Besides having horns and claws, I now possess a tail and leathery wings.

This is how it began five years ago. I had played on a soccer team for several years. As I grew older I began having difficulty playing soccer because of shortness of breath. I was diagnosed as having mild asthma which ended my soccer career and eliminated my participation in most physical sports.

Shortly afterward, during a Boy Scout summer camp, I participated in riflery at their shooting range. This was the first time I had ever touched a firearm. To my amazement, I won the camp's first place award for marksmanship. I was more than eager when a friend of mine asked me if I would like to join a shooting club.

My parents were wary when I asked to join the rifle club. My mother feared guns, but my father felt there was no problem with trying this sport. Gratefully, he gave me the opportunity to try rifle marksmanship, despite secretly hoping that I would quit. Both of my parents were afraid of what people would think about their son's involvement with guns.

Like my parents a majority of people believe that all firearms are dangerous to our society. All they remember are the hysterical news releases of street violence and injured children. I am often asked how many deer I've shot. Frankly, I could never bring myself to injure another living creature and neither would most of the competitors I have met. Yet, I keep finding myself defending the sport from all of the misconceptions that surround it. Most people have developed a negative impression of the sport and I have found that these prejudices are difficult, if not

Harvard Admission Essay

<H2>"Mike"</H2>

Influence? Why is it that the people who influence us most influence us in ways that are not easily quantified? Through her work with abused children, my mother has shown me the heroism of selfless dedication to a worthy cause. By being an upstanding individual, my playwriting teacher in middle school acted as an inspiring male role model at a time when I needed one most. By being approachable and interesting, my World History teacher in my freshman year of high school opened my eyes to the connections between a society's culture and its history and broadened my view of cultures and the world. While these influences mean much to me and have contributed greatly to my development, they came too easily to mind.

The fact that I could sit down and write a list of how these people influenced me suggests that the influence did not alter me in any profound way. These people are all my elders, and perhaps I feel distanced from them. The person whose influence shook me to the deepest level is a person whose influence is nearly impossible to describe. Mike, the best friend I’ve ever had, changed me, and I changed him at one of the most crucial times in our lives: the seventh grade. We developed our personalities, our senses of humor, and our love for girls at the same time and in the same manner. It would cheapen his influence to quantify it; I am what I am because of him; I cannot say that about anybody else.

Mike came to my school in the seventh grade, and we immediately clicked. Before he came, I didn’t feel like an outcast by any means, as I had my friends that I had known since first grade. However, until Mike, I never had anyone my age to identify with completely. Mike made me feel confident in who I was; he reaffirmed my drives and my thoughts and my inspirations. At this awkward stage in our lives, we found uncritical appreciation in each other. We both were obsessed by movies and had a similar sense of humor. We had the same problems and the same thoughts. That was all it took.

Halfway through that same year, Mike and I became inseparable. In fact, our yearbook had a section that lists the names of students and what they were never seen without. Under Mike, it

<H2>Hiking to Understanding</H2>
Surrounded by thousands of stars, complete silence, and spectacular mountains, I stood atop New Hampshire's Presidential Range awestruck by nature's beauty. Immediately, I realized that I must dedicate my life to understanding the causes of the universe's beauty. In addition, the hike taught me several valuable lessons that will allow me to increase my understanding through scientific research.

Although the first few miles of the hike up Mt. Madison did not offer fantastic views, the vistas became spectacular once I climbed above tree line. Immediately, I sensed that understanding the natural world parallels climbing a mountain. To reach my goal of total comprehension of natural phenomena, I realized that I must begin with knowledge that may be uninteresting by itself. However, this knowledge will form the foundation of an accurate view of the universe. Much like every step while hiking leads the hiker nearer the mountain peak, all knowledge leads the scientist nearer total understanding.

Above tree line, the barrenness and silence of the hike taught me that individuals must have their own direction. All hikers know that they must carry complete maps to reach their destinations; they do not allow others to hold their maps for them. Similarly, surrounded only by mountaintops, sky, and silence, I recognized the need to remain individually focused on my life's goal of understanding the physical universe.

At the summit, the view of the surrounding mountain range is spectacular. The panorama offers a view of hills and smaller mountains. Some people during their lives climb many small hills. However, to have the most accurate view of the world, I must be dedicated to climbing the biggest mountains I can find. Too often people simply hike across a flat valley without ascending because they content themselves with the scenery. The mountain showed me that I cannot content myself with the scenery. When night fell upon the summit, I stared at the slowly appearing stars until they completely filled the night sky. Despite the windy conditions and below freezing temperatures, I could not tear myself away from the awe-inspiring beauty of the cosmos. Similarly, despite the frustration and difficulties inherent in scientific study, I cannot retreat from my goal of universal understanding.

When observing Saturn's rising, the Milky Way Cloud, and the Perseid meteor shower, I simultaneously felt a great sense of insignificance and purpose. Obviously, earthly concerns are insignificant to the rest of

Stern/NYU Admission Essay

1. Think about the decisions you have made in your life. Describe the following:

PAST: What choices have you made that led you to your current position?
PRESENT: Why is a Stern MBA necessary at this point in your life?
FUTURE: What is your desired position upon graduation from the Stern School?

I like options, I like security, and I like power. With these wants, I knew at a very early age that I would enter business and thus I attended a college that specializes in the subject. In my first position out of school, I was hired by Dunhill Equities as a cold-caller. After several weeks of being hung up on by angry prospects, I decided that this career path would not lead me to success. I then moved within the firm to a position as sales assistant. While this was by no means my dream job, I learned a tremendous amount about business, and I gained useful exposure to the world of finance. Unfortunately, the company hit a period of instability, and after ten months I transferred with my boss to Coleman & Company. Thirteen months later, that company also began to fail, and I began to search for another path to advancement. With two strikes against me, I hit a home run and was hired by Sanford Bernstein into a challenging job with limitless opportunity for growth.

After almost three years at Bernstein, I am once again seeking career advancement. My education and work experience have provided me with an excellent introduction to business, and they have sparked my interest in finance. Taking into consideration my foundation and my interests, graduate business school is the next logical step. At this point in my life, I consider a Stern MBA to be necessary since I need to gain a broader understanding of finance and to sharpen my analytical skills in order to be successful in corporate finance. Stern’s MBA program will allow me to concentrate in finance, strengthen my global business perspective, and provide me with the opportunity to study with and learn from people with varied backgrounds. The school’s location in the financial capital of the world and in one of the most diverse cities in the world also suits me perfectly.

Aside from advancing my career, I would also like to develop personally. In college I did not join many clubs or organizations, and I did not

Anderson/UCLA Admission Essay

What do you consider to be your most important personal and professional accomplishments to date? (Please limit to three.)

With no money, no direction, and no goals, I graduated from high school in 1987 not knowing if I would ever be a man, if I would ever know what life means. Unable to afford college tuition, I worked odd jobs for a few months before deciding to join the United States Marine Corps. A scrappy kid who needed structure and support, I entered the Marines unprepared for the next thirteen weeks of extraordinary physical and mental challenges.

Arriving at the recruit-training depot in Parris Island South Carolina on February 3,1988 not knowing what to expect, I watched my hair fall off my head, had vaccinations for every disease ever discovered, and learned to live with sixty other young men in close quarters. The days were long. I would wake up at 4 a.m. and work nonstop for 18 hours until I could collapse on my bed. Exposed to individuals from many different cultural and economic backgrounds, I learned the value of teamwork and the work ethic essential to leadership. When we first arrived on the island, my platoon was a jumbled mess of disobedient, out of shape, undisciplined boys. After three months of exhausting training we were molded into a group of highly motivated, physically fit men. On the proudest day of my life, I marched in the graduation parade to become a United States Marine.

After being discharged from the United States Marine Corps, I became determined to attain an electrical engineering degree from Florida State University. I wisely invested in the GI Bill early on in my Marine Corps career in order to go to college. Although a substantial amount of money, the GI Bill only covered my tuition; to pay for food and rent, I took a full time job with the VA work-study program. In the beginning I had difficulty adjusting to working full time while maintaining a full coarse load, and I began to feel hindered by my years outside the classroom. However, determined to succeed, I learned to manage my time well, and I established good study habits, which have continued to the present. In the spring of 1997 I obtained a Bachelors degree in Electrical engineering, a full year ahead of schedule. I take pride in the fact that I am the first

Harvard Medical School Admission Essay

<H2>A typical work day</H2>

My typical work day begins at 8:30 in the morning with a visit to either Credit Agricole Indosuez, a French bank with whom my company has a classified credit facility, or to Janata, a nationalized bank which is considering our proposal for debt financing of an Acrylic yarn project. Although I face the same challenge of raising money at both banks, my approach differs between the different banks. When dealing with Indosuez, I must be very objective with in-depth knowledge of the issues while with Janata, my frequent visits are what matters most. Although I did not study business, my keenness towards finance and my achievements within the business department of my company have assigned me these responsibilities.

Between 11:30 and 12:00,I visit our textile mill, which is about an hour's drive from the city. I work there as the technical director, and my primary responsibilities include monitoring plant efficiency, product quality, maintenance, and my favorite -- working on customer response analysis, a recently devised and relatively unique strategy for quality assurance. The job is demanding and sometimes challenging. We are continuously on the look out for new products and means to becoming cost efficient. By 2:30 or so I leave the mill for our city office. I work with our executives in preparing and following up on various proposals, preparing quotations etc. I also attend meetings with equipment sellers. One of my routine jobs is to sit with my colleagues in the procurement department for testing and selection of raw materials, mainly cotton and dyestuffs. By 4:30,I usually begin work on my personal business, which I maintain through a separate desk in our head office. At this desk I maintain my trade intermediary business for readymade garment export and footwear. I spend about an hour here before I retire for the day.

During the last three years I have devoted a significant amount of time and energy to the betterment of young entrepreneurs, who in this country are mistreated, stripped of opportunities, and looked down upon. In my quest to start my own business, I faced many obstacles that I later found to plague all entrepreneurs in my country. Established family heads discourage their younger members from starting separate businesses; they would rather their younger members join them in the so called "safe business." Moreover, companies and government organizations will not

Med School Admission Essay

As a potential medical student, I will strive to be a tremendous asset to The Chicago Medical School by devoting all my time and life to becoming an excellent physician. I believe that I am obligated to use my talents in a constructive manner, in a manner that benefits society. The medical career gives me the unique opportunity to express my many talents while benefiting human life.

B. Berston M.D. once said: “ ... a funny thing happens to medical students on their way to becoming physicians: they forget how to hold a conversation.” I believe that my ability to communicate makes me well suited to pursue a medical career. While I possess the strong science background necessary for success in the profession, I also consider myself a “ people” person. As a waiter and bartender, I dramatically improved and expanded my communication skills since I was constantly meeting new people and discussing different topics. Because people constantly disclosed their personal issues to me as a bartender, I learned to become not only a good conversationalist, but also an excellent listener.

In medical school, I also plan to pursue side work educating students and serving as a resource to the public. One of my most rewarding experiences has been tutoring high school students in math, physics, and biology, and helping people in my choir learn Byzantine music. Always able to develop a good rapport with students, I believe I possess a talent for teaching others in a friendly manner and in a manner that helps them to grasp difficult concepts easily. As part of my medical career, I will aim to continue teaching and to provide information to the public on the prevention and treatment of ailments and diseases.

Undoubtedly my cultural diversity will be a great contribution to The Chicago Medical School. Being raised in a Greek family in Canada, visiting different countries, and now living in the United States, I have experienced the similarities and differences among many diverse cultural groups and geographical areas. This allowed me to relate to different types of people by understanding their ways and beliefs, a quality that will help me work well with other medical students and help me serve my patients better in the future.

Highly motivated to succeed, I dramatically improved my grades following a time of confusion and immaturity in 1990 and 1991,which was brought on by family illness

Med School Admission Essay 2

I firmly believe in the powerful message of Ecclesiastes 3:1, which states that every endeavor man can undertake has its own time and meaning. Looking back on my own life, I see these different seasons as stages of growth that have helped me to understand my own potential and the path that I wish to take in life. I feel that I have lived deeply and fully, and now wish to apply the valuable life lessons I have gained to what I feel is my true calling. Now is the season to explore the fascinating world of medicine, and to finally make that dream a reality.

As a child, I never believed that I could succeed. Growing up in one foster home after another, I lacked the stability that a youth needs in order to excel in classes and build a proper foundation for the future. I was pregnant by the age of eighteen, and dropped out of school to try to forge a future for my children. Life was difficult but fulfilling, and I found much joy in being the mother of two lovely children. The day my second child was diagnosed with Krabbe’s disease, however, all of my happiness seemed to vanish before my very eyes.

Krabbe’s disease is both terminal and debilitating, and the doctors gave my daughter a life expectancy of eighteen months. Swallowing my shock and sorrow, I devoted myself to making the most of the precious time I had left with my child. I researched intensively on Krabbe’s disease, learning as much as I could about its mechanisms and the course it would run. I applied these lessons to caring for my daughter, and provided her with the twenty-four hour a day care that she required. Because I was afraid she would die at any moment, I never left her side, even to go to work. In order to pay the bills, I took in outside sewing and odd jobs. But no sacrifice was too great for my daughter. She lived to the age of four, long past her expectancy, which the doctors attributed to my constant care.

Being such an intimate witness to the struggle of life and death left me with a deep sense of human fragility. I realized that the human body is so very intricate and beautiful in its complex delicacy. Working closely with doctors, studying medical texts, and nursing

Law School Admission Essay

Many college students know exactly what field to enter after graduation and have been preparing for that field over the course of their entire college career. However, I had difficulty discovering a career field rewarding enough to devote my entire life to, a career field worthy of education. While I had always considered pursuing the law and majored in public policy as an undergraduate, I was never passionate about it. I didn't have clear goals, and it seemed to me as if my degree and my circumstances were pushing me into studying the law; I needed to rediscover why I fell in love with the law in the first place.

As a college senior, I took the LSAT because all of my classmates were taking it. I did not prepare, and I really did not want to attend law school after college; thankfully, my low LSAT score guaranteed this. I needed to understand more about life before I could give myself to a career. After being in school for about two decades, I felt completely out of touch with reality and did not think I would ever find career direction by attending more schooling. With these thoughts in mind, I determined I needed real-world experience to help me find the direction I so desperately sought.

I accepted an investor relations position in New York that tested both my intelligence and my work ethic. The first few months moved at a hectic pace as I attempted to acquire knowledge of my new pursuit and to control the responsibilities assigned to me. However, I quickly adjusted and maintained a schedule of seventy-hour workweeks. Because of my hard work and growing expertise, my colleagues began to acknowledge me as an important member of the organization and my opinion became respected and sought out. This respect provided me with a great deal of confidence, and I began to realize that I had unlimited potential. I had finally regained the attitude necessary for success, and my recent LSAT score is a testament of this self-awakening.

While I may not have taken the direct route to law school, I took the course that suited me well. I needed to find goals that would drive me through all-nighters and exam periods. Over the course of the past few years, I have transformed from an inexperienced college graduate to a respected professional. My departure from classroom study has

Law School Admission Essay 2

I began hallucinating early Thursday morning. My team and I were halfway finished with what our instructors dubbed “The Long Paddle,” and I could feel my sanity slowly slipping away. A combination of severe sleep deprivation and extreme physical exercise can do that to you. I had not had more than three hours of sleep since “Hellweek” had begun on Sunday afternoon. As I looked around me, I contemplated the extent of my delirium. I was reasonably certain that the Statue of Liberty does not belong in San Diego, and I doubted that the tigers I could see racing along the river shore were real. My ears picked up the sound of our boat’s leader having a heated argument with Jenkins, but Jenkins had quit the team two weeks ago.

Looking around me, I felt reassured seeing the confused expressions on my teammates’ faces. Even though I was stuck in a tiny inflatable boat with six potential lunatics, I at least knew that I was not the only one being affected by the exercise. Hellweek. I had been through some incarnation of it during each year of my life, ever since peewee football. But no previous “hell” could compare to the punishment that the United States Navy dishes out during Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training (BUD/S). Hellweek marks the sixth week of BUD/S, and is a six-day celebration of misery designed to eliminate weak candidates. Only the strong can survive it.

This year’s week of torment was heightened by an untimely cold spell; more than two thirds of our original class had already quit. Running on soft sand beaches while wearing combat boots, getting a facemask full of salt water while lugging twin steel scuba tanks on your back, being soaking wet and covered with sand… these are enough to make most people question their desire to finish the program. But it was the cold that claimed the most victims. We shivered through the nights and well into the mornings, the chill of the air seeping into our very bones. Visions of hot meals and warm beds haunted us; we knew that ending the suffering and the cold was as easy as quitting the program. And quitting was so very east. Simply stand in front of your classmates and ring a silver ship’s bell three times… the temptation was nearly irresistible. But I had set a goal for myself and I

Step 2: Selecting a Topic

Having completed step one, you should now have a rough idea of the elements you wish to include in your essay, including your goals, important life experiences, research experience, diversifying features, spectacular nonacademic accomplishments, etc. You should also now have an idea of what impression you want to make on the admissions officers. We should remark that at this stage, undergraduate applicants have a large advantage over graduate school applicants. Whereas nobody questions a high school student's motivation to attend college, graduate and professional school applicants must directly address in their essays their desire to study their selected field.

You must now confront the underlying problem of the admissions essay. You must now consider topics that will allow you to synthesize your important personal characteristics and experiences into a coherent whole while simultaneously addressing your desire to attend a specific institution. While most admissions essays allow great latitude in topic selection, you must also be sure to answer the questions that were asked of you. Leaving a lasting impression on someone who reads 50-100 essays a day will not be easy, but we have compiled some guidelines to help you get started. With any luck, one or two topics, with small changes, will allow you to answer application questions for 5-7 different colleges, although admissions officers do appreciate essays that provide convincing evidence of how an applicant will fit into a particular academic environment. You should at least have read the college's webpage, admissions catalog, and have an understanding of the institution's strengths.

Consider the following questions before proceeding:
<ul>
<li>Have you selected a topic that describes something of personal importance in your life, with which you can use <b>vivid personal experiences</b> as supporting details?

<li>Is your topic a gimmick? That is, do you plan to write your essay in iambic pentameter or make it funny. You should be very, very careful if you are planning to do this. We recommend strongly that you do not do this. Almost always, this is done poorly and is not appreciated by the admissions committee. Nothing is worse than not laughing or not being amused at something that was written to be funny or amusing.

<li>Will your topic only repeat information listed elsewhere on your application? If so, pick a new topic. Don’t mention GPAs or standardized test scores in your essay.

<li>Can you offer vivid supporting paragraphs to your essay topic? If you cannot easily think of supporting paragraphs

Step 3: Writing the Essay - Tips for Success

Even seemingly boring topics can be made into exceptional admissions essays with an innovative approach. In writing the essay you must bear in mind your two goals: to persuade the admissions officer that you are extremely worthy of admission and to make the admissions officer aware that you are more than a GPA and a standardized score, that you are a real-life, intriguing personality.

Unfortunately, there is no surefire step-by-step method to writing a good essay. EssayEdge editors at <a href="http://www.commission-junction.com/track/track.dll?AID=819651&PID=457308&URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eessayedge%2Ecom">EssayEdge</a><img src="http://www.commission-junction.com/banners/tracker.exe?AID=819651&PID=457308&banner=0.gif" height=1 width=1 border=0> will remake your essay into an awesome, memorable masterpiece, but every topic requires a different treatment since no two essays are alike. However, we have compiled the following list of tips that you should find useful while writing your admissions essay.

<OL>
<LI><B>Answer the Question.</B> You can follow the next 12 steps, but if you miss the question, you will not be admitted to any institution.
<LI><B>Be Original.</B> Even seemingly boring essay topics can sound interesting if creatively approached. If writing about a gymnastics competition you trained for, do not start your essay: &quot;I worked long hours for many weeks to train for XXX competition.&quot; Consider an opening like, &quot;Every morning I awoke at 5:00 to sweat, tears, and blood as I trained on the uneven bars hoping to bring the state gymnastics trophy to my hometown.&quot;
<LI><B>Be Yourself</B>. Admissions officers want to learn about you and your writing ability. Write about something meaningful and describe your feelings, not necessarily your actions. If you do this, your essay will be unique. Many people travel to foreign countries or win competitions, but your feelings during these events are unique to you. Unless a philosophy or societal problem has interested you intensely for years, stay away from grand themes that you have little personal experience with.
<LI><B>Don't &quot;Thesaurize&quot; your Composition</B>. For some reason, students continue to think big words make good essays. Big words are fine, but only if they are used in the appropriate contexts with complex styles. Think Hemingway.
<LI><B>Use Imagery and Clear, Vivid Prose.</B> If you are not adept with imagery, you can write an excellent essay without it, but it's not easy. The application essay lends itself to imagery since the entire essay requires your experiences as supporting details. Appeal to the five senses of the admissions officers.
<LI><B>Spend the Most Time on your Introduction.</B> Expect admissions officers to spend 1-2 minutes reading your essay. You must use your introduction to

Step 1: Brainstorming

The most important part of your essay is the subject matter. You should expect to devote about 1-2 weeks simply to brainstorming ideas. To begin brainstorming a subject idea consider the following points. From brainstorming, you may find a subject you had not considered at first.
<UL>
<LI>What are your major accomplishments, and why do you consider them accomplishments? Do not limit yourself to accomplishments you have been formally recognized for since the most interesting essays often are based on accomplishments that may have been trite at the time but become crucial when placed in the context of your life.
<LI>Does any attribute, quality, or skill distinguish you from everyone else? How did you develop this attribute?
<LI>Consider your favorite books, movies, works of art, etc. Have these influenced your life in a meaningful way? Why are they your favorites?
<LI>What was the most difficult time in your life, and why? How did your perspective on life change as a result of the difficulty?
<LI>Have you ever struggled mightily for something and succeeded? What made you successful?
<LI>Have you ever struggled mightily for something and failed? How did you respond?
<LI>Of everything in the world, what would you most like to be doing right now? Where would you most like to be? Who, of everyone living and dead, would you most like to be with? These questions should help you realize what you love most.
<LI>Have you experienced a moment of epiphany, as if your eyes were opened to something you were previously blind to?
<LI>What is your strongest, most unwavering personality trait? Do you maintain strong beliefs or adhere to a philosophy? How would your friends characterize you? What would they write about if they were writing your admissions essay for you?
<LI>What have you done outside of the classroom that demonstrates qualities sought after by universities? Of these, which means the most to you?
<LI>What are your most important extracurricular or community activities? What made you join these activities? What made you continue to contribute to them?
<LI>What are your dreams of the future? When you look back on your life in thirty years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What people, things, and accomplishments do you need? How does this particular university fit into your plans for the future?
</UL>

<H2>If these questions cannot cure your writer's block, consider the following exercises:</H2>
<ol>
<li><b>Ask for Help from Parents, Friends, Colleagues, etc.</b>

College Essay [Barnard College]

The members of the Committee on Admissions seek to gain an understanding of you as a person through a written essay. This essay is your opportunity to discuss an idea that is important to you, to write about a person who has influenced you, or to describe an experience that has helped shape who you are. The committee is also interested in how you think and how you express your thoughts.
