The Tennessee Valley Authority

Uploaded by chiri on Sep 13, 1999

The Tennessee Valley Authority was an independent United States government agency set up on May 18, 1933 to oversee the development of flood control, power production, preventing malaria, navigation, planting new trees where they had all been cut down, and erosion control. These things were studied very thoroughly. TVA improved the economic conditions by a lot in big areas of land in Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, and Virginia. The TVA built lots of multipurpose dams to harness the rivers' power and put it to good use. Areas of where the TVA operated were testing grounds for flood control, rural electrification, new ways of farming and forestry, and other ways of resource development. In 1933 the TVA was in bad shape. The land had been worked too hard for too long, which eroded the soil and made it bad quality. Most of the timber had been cut down. TVA made fertilizers, helped farmers learn how to improve their crops, improved the habitat for wildlife and fish, replanted forests, and helped control forest fires. The biggest change in the Tennessee Valley was electricity made by the TVA dams. Electric machinery and other electric things made farming more easy. Map at http://medellia.ml.org/tvamap.jpg
