New York City Blues

Uploaded by Jamie on Jan 11, 2001

I walk through the village
Through the park where I watched
the street performers dance so long ago
It’s dusk and the neighborhood
Crew is alive and well.
“Hey, girl, I got it cheap”
Normally I would scurry past
My head down
Tonight I smile faintly
I know that this will be the last time
I hear those words.
All night I walk
The city lights overhead, indifferent
To the thoughts in my head
In the darkness the twins shine
High above the other
buildings in the sky
I think of home, three blocks
And yet an eternity away.
How I’d walked the
Cobbled streets of downtown
Smelling the aroma of salmon
I dare to take one final ride on the six train
In the stillness of the night I am alone.
Nowhere in mind
I get off at Astor and remember
The fashion shoot they did there long ago
And how happy just being
A part of it made me feel.
I think about how it will seem
Tomorrow as I board at 34th
For the final time
And I wonder if the city of lights
Will feel my departure
The way I will
If it will weep and notice
That I left a piece of me
Within its borders.
