How He Left The Hotel By Louisa Baldwin

Uploaded by huzzah on Mar 31, 2004

This is a story that I got off the internet at http://gaslight.mtroyal.ca/howhotel.htm. This story was written a long time ago. It happened at the Emperor Hotel, in what I believe is London.

This story explains how a person worked at the Hotel. He was in charge of the “lift” or as we like to call it, the elevator. In November of the year that this story occurred in, a person named Colonel Saxby came to the hotel. He was strange to the main character. He had strange habits, for example, he never sat down whether the elevator was empty or not. In February, since the Colonel went on the elevator every day, the main character noticed that the Colonel wasn’t taking the elevator. The main character heard from a chamber maiden that the Colonel was sick, so this explained his absence. One day, the Colonel took the lift down. He looked very ill. He stepped out of the hotel. It was midnight. Suddenly, in came two doctors who said that they needed to attend to a matter of life and death. The main character learned that the Colonel had died 5 minutes before he went out the door. The main character was spooked that he had to take the Colonel down a second time, so he and the night porter quit.

This is one of my favorite stories, because I can visualize everything, and because it is scary. My theory is that the Colonel died, but he did not want to truly die, so the first time, the life operator only took down the Colonel’s ghost. This is an excellent story, not too scary, but not too babyish either. http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~fadey/othgho.html contains more ghost stories, which I haven’t read.
