I clearly remember one day I was playing with my cousin in my sister’s room. There, my cousin started jumping up and down on my sister’s bed and knocked down my sister’s frame. The frame cracked and the glass broke. My whole family came running in and asked “Who did this?” My cousin pointed directly at me and said, “She did it!!” Since I wanted to respond in the same language, I yelled “No! He did it!” with a distinguishable Mexican accent. Everyone laughed at me and also mocked my accent. No one realized that this was the turning point of my life. The following months I was put into English classes. I went through such embarrassing moments because of the silly mistakes I would make. In Spanish a double L makes a “Y” sound (like saying yes). When I first saw the word “Llama” I read it as “Y-a-m-a.” I went through stressful times because I didn’t know English. Every time I read passages at home, I carried a dictionary so that I could pronounce unfamiliar words correctly. The words might have been easy to other English-speaking children but to me they were hard. I spoke English everywhere so that I could practice it. Now, I have the advantage of knowing the Spanish language better than my cousins and a lot of other Hispanics who can just speak and not write it. Also, the Spanish language has shown me better understandings of other subjects. I have achieved a lot more than what my mom and dad have (education wise). Both only went up to second grade. I have all honor classes and have straight A’s. I truly put my dedication to school and homework. I appreciate what education does and I also appreciate every second I spend with a book. I had to work hard to stand where I stand now. I wish to get a major in Chemistry and in Biology. Also, I want to get a minor in Spanish. I realized that everything in this world has to be earned. I have truly earned my grades and I am looking for success. I want to attend a university that will offer the best education; this is why I wish to attend Dominican University.
