Racism In AmericaWritten by: sentiencenerd There is surely no nation in the world that holds "racism" in greater horror than does the United States. Compared to other kinds of offenses, it is thought to be somehow more reprehensible. The press and public have become so used to tales of murder, rape, robbery, and arson, that any but the most spectacular crimes are shrugged off as part of the inevitable texture of American life. "Racism" is never shrugged off. For example, when a White Georgetown Law School student reported earlier this year that black students are not as qualified as White students, it set off a booming, national controversy about "racism." If the student had merely murdered someone he would have attracted far less attention and criticism. Racism is, indeed, the national obsession. Universities are on full alert for it, newspapers and politicians denounce it, churches preach against it, America is said to be racked with it, but just what is racism? Dictionaries are not much help in understanding what is meant by the word. They usually define it as the belief that one's own ethnic stock is superior to others, or as the belief that culture and behavior are rooted in race. When Americans speak of racism they mean a great deal more than this. Nevertheless, the dictionary definition of racism is a clue to understanding what Americans do mean. A peculiarly American meaning derives from the current dogma that all ethnic stocks are equal. Despite clear evidence to the contrary, all races have been declared to be equally talented and hard- working, and anyone who questions the dogma is thought to be not merely wrong but evil. The dogma has logical consequences that are profoundly important. If blacks, for example, are equal to Whites in every way, what accounts for their poverty, criminality, and dissipation? Since any theory of racial differences has been outlawed, the only possible explanation for black failure is White racism. And since blacks are markedly poor, crime-prone, and dissipated, America must be racked with pervasive racism. Nothing else could be keeping them in such an abject state. All public discourse on race today is locked into this rigid logic. Any explanation for black failure that does not depend on White wickedness threatens to veer off into the forbidden territory of racial differences. Thus, even if today's Whites can find in their hearts no desire to oppress blacks, yesterday's Whites must have oppressed them. If Whites do not consciously oppress blacks, they must oppress them Unconsciously. If no obviously racist individuals can be identified, then societal institutions must be racist. Or, since blacks are failing so terribly in America, there simply must be millions of White people we do not know about, who are working day and night to keep blacks in misery. The dogma of racial equality leaves no room for an explanation of black failure that is not, in some fashion, an indictment of White people. The logical consequences of this are clear. Since we are required to believe that the only explanation for non-White failure is White racism, every time a non-White is poor, commits a crime, goes on welfare, or takes drugs, White society stands accused of yet another act of racism. All failure or misbehavior by non-Whites is standing proof that White society is riddled with hatred and bigotry. For precisely so long as non-Whites fail to succeed in life at exactly the same level as Whites, Whites will be, by definition, thwarting and oppressing them. This obligatory pattern of thinking leads to strange conclusions. First of all, racism is a sin that is thought to be committed almost exclusively by White people. Indeed, a black congressman from Chicago, Gus Savage, and Coleman Young, the black mayor of Detroit, have argued that only White people can be racist. Likewise, in 1987, the affirmative action officer of the State Insurance Fund of New York issued a company pamphlet in which she explained that all Whites are racist and that only Whites can be racist. How else could the plight of blacks be explained without flirting with the possibility of racial inequality? Although some blacks and liberal Whites concede that non-Whites can, perhaps, be racist, they invariably add that non-Whites have been forced into it as self-defense because of centuries of White oppression. What appears to be non-White racism is so understandable and forgivable that it hardly deserves the name. Thus, whether or not an act is called racism depends on the race of the racist. What would surely be called racism when done by Whites is thought to be normal when done by anyone else. The reverse is also true. Examples of this sort of double standard are so common, it is almost tedious to list them: When a White man kills a black man and uses the word "nigger" while doing so, there is an enormous media uproar and the nation beats its collective breast; when members of the black Yahweh cult carry out ritual murders of random Whites, the media are silent (see AR of March, 1991). College campuses forbid pejorative statements about non-Whites as "racist," but ignore scurrilous attacks on Whites. At election time, if 60 percent of the White voters vote for a White candidate, and 95 percent of the black voters vote for the black opponent, it is Whites who are accused of racial bias. There are 107 "historically black" colleges, whose fundamental blackness must be preserved in the name of diversity, but all historically White colleges must be forcibly integrated in the name of... the same thing. To resist would be racist. "Black pride" is said to be a wonderful and worthy thing, but anything that could be construed as an expression of White pride is a form of hatred. It is perfectly natural for third-world immigrants to expect school instruction and driver's tests in their own languages, whereas for native Americans to ask them to learn English is racist. Blatant anti-White prejudice, in the form of affirmative action, is now the law of the land. Anything remotely like affirmative action, if practiced in favor of Whites, would be attacked as despicable favoritism. All across the country, black, Hispanic, and Asian clubs and caucuses are thought to be fine expressions of ethnic solidarity, but any club or association expressly for Whites is by definition racist. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) campaigns openly for black advantage but is a respected "civil rights" organization. The National Association for the Advancement of White People (NAAWP) campaigns merely for equal treatment of all races, but is said to be viciously racist. At a few college campuses, students opposed to affirmative action have set up student unions for Whites, analogous to those for blacks, Hispanics, etc, and have been roundly condemned as racists. Recently, when the White students at Lowell High School in San Francisco found themselves to be a minority, they asked for a racially exclusive club like the ones that non-Whites have. They were turned down in horror. Indeed, in America today, any club not specifically formed to be a White enclave but whose members simply happen all to be White is branded as racist. Today, one of the favorite slogans that define the asymmetric quality of American racism is "celebration of diversity." It has begun to dawn on a few people that "diversity" is always achieved at the expense of Whites (and sometimes men), and never the other way around. No one proposes that Howard University be made more diverse by admitting Whites, Hispanics, or Asians. No one ever suggests that National Hispanic University in San Jose (CA) would benefit from the diversity of having non-Hispanics on campus. No one suggests that the Black Congressional Caucus or the executive ranks of the NAACP or the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund suffer from a lack of diversity. Somehow, it is perfectly legitimate for them to celebrate homogeneity. And yet any all-White group - a company, a town, a school, a club, a neighborhood - is thought to suffer from a crippling lack of diversity that must be remedied as quickly as possible. Only when Whites have been reduced to a minority has "diversity" been achieved. Let us put it bluntly: To "celebrate" or "embrace" diversity, as we are so often asked to do, is no different from deploring an excess of Whites. In fact, the entire nation is thought to suffer from an excess of Whites. Our current immigration policies are structured so that approximately 90 percent of our annual 800,000 legal immigrants are non-White. The several million illegal immigrants that enter the country every year are virtually all non-White. It would be racist not to be grateful for this laudable contribution to "diversity." It is, of course, only White nations that are called upon to practice this kind of "diversity." It is almost criminal to imagine a nation of any other race countenancing blatant dispossession of this kind. What if the United States were pouring its poorest, least educated citizens across the border into Mexico? Could anyone be fooled into thinking that Mexico was being "culturally enriched?" What if the state of Chihuahua were losing its majority population to poor Whites who demanded that schools be taught in English, who insisted on celebrating the Fourth of July, who demanded the right to vote even if they weren't citizens, who clamored for "affirmative action" in jobs and schooling? Would Mexico - or any other non-White nation - tolerate this kind of cultural and demographic depredation? Of course not. Yet White Americans are supposed to look upon the flood of Hispanics and Asians entering their country as a priceless cultural gift. They are supposed to "celebrate" their own loss of influence, their own dwindling numbers, their own dispossession, for to do otherwise would be hopelessly racist. There is another curious asymmetry about American racism. When non- Whites advance their own racial purposes, no one ever accuses them of "hating" another group. Blacks can join "civil rights" groups and Hispanics can be activists without fear of being branded as bigots and hate mongers. They can agitate openly for racial preferences that can come only at the expense of whites. They can demand preferential treatment of all kinds without anyone ever suggesting that they are "anti-white." Whites, on the other hand, need only express their opposition to affirmative action to be called haters. They need only subject racial policies that are clearly prejudicial to themselves to be called racists. Should they actually go so far as to say that they prefer the company of their own kind, that they wish to be left alone to enjoy the fruits of their European heritage, they are irredeemably wicked and hateful. Here, then is the final, baffling inconsistency about American race relations. All non-whites are allowed to prefer the company of their own kind, to think of themselves as groups with interests distinct from those of the whole, and to work openly for group advantage. None of this is thought to be racist. At the same time, whites must also champion the racial interests of non-whites. They must sacrifice their own future on the altar of "diversity" and cooperate in their own dispossession. They are to encourage, even to subsidize, the displacement of a European people and culture by alien peoples and cultures. To put it in the simplest possible terms, White people are cheerfully to slaughter their own society, to commit racial and cultural suicide. To refuse to do so would be racism. Of course, the entire non-white enterprise in the United States is perfectly natural and healthy. Nothing could be more natural than to love one's people and to hope that it should flourish. Filipinos and El Salvadorans are doubtless astonished to discover that simply by setting foot in the United States they are entitled to affirmative action preferences over native-born whites, but can they be blamed for accepting them? Is it surprising that they should want their languages, their cultures, their brothers and sisters to take possession and put their mark indelibly on the land? If the once-great people of a once-great nation is bent upon self-destruction and is prepared to hand over land and power to whomever shows up and asks for it, why should Mexicans and Cambodians complain? No, it is the White enterprise in the United States that is unnatural, unhealthy, and without historical precedent. Whites have let themselves be convinced that it is racist merely to object to dispossession, much less to work for their own interests. Never in the history of the world has a dominant people thrown open the gates to strangers, and poured out its wealth to aliens. Never before has a people been fooled into thinking that there was virtue or nobility in surrendering its heritage, and giving away to others its place in history. Of all the races in America, only whites have been tricked into thinking that a preference for one's own kind is racism. Only whites are ever told that a love for their own people is somehow "hatred" of others. All healthy people prefer the company of their own kind, and it has nothing to do with hatred. All men love their families more than their neighbors, but this does not mean that they hate their neighbors. Whites who love their racial family need bear no ill will towards non-whites. They only wish to be left alone to participate in the unfolding of their racial and cultural destinies. What whites in America are being asked to do is therefore utterly unnatural. They are being asked to devote themselves to the interests of other races and to ignore the interests of their own. This is like asking a man to forsake his own children and love the children of his neighbors, since to do otherwise would be "racist." What then, is "racism?" It is considerably more than any dictionary is likely to say. It is any opposition by whites to official policies of racial preference for non-whites. It is any preference by whites for their own people and culture. It is any resistance by whites to the idea of becoming a minority people. It is any unwillingness to be pushed aside. It is, in short, any of the normal aspirations of people-hood that have defined nations since the beginning of history - but only so long as the aspirations are those of whites.

I think that you have made some very valid points on the problems of racism against white people from some black people, as just as some whites can be racist and hateful towards blacks, some blacks can also be racist and hateful towards whites. Discrimination against *anyone*-black, white, gay, straight etc. is always wrong and should be equally punishable. However this is about where my agreement with you finishes. I do not agree that it is 'most natural' to want to spend your time with people of the same colour- I hate to sound corny but I believe it is important what a person is like and I don't believe that your colour dictates your personality. How you can liken people of the same colour as you to your own family confuses me- I no more associate with a white stranger than I do a black one- the key word here is 'stranger' and not their colour. On the same note, I do not associate or long to be friends with a nice white person any more than I long to be friends with a nice black person- not to overstress the point but it matters to me only what the person is like. Do your really believe that everyone simply longs to be with people of the same colour as them, and that they spend time with people of another colour just to show they are not racist? Being with people of your colour only might be your preference, and much as I don't understand it I accept that is your personal right, and I do not find you racist because of it. However, I believe that someone *is* racist if they discriminate against someone because they are a different colour to them- and deliberately exclude them for no other reason (personality) than the colour of their skin. Basically- I believe in equality: not advantages for anyone because of their skin colour, sex, religion, sexuality etc. - just equal advantages for everyone; and people to be judged solely on their personality and what they do. Idealistic, maybe..but this is what I believe and hope for.

This is one of the worst pieces of rubbish I have ever read in my entire life. If the points were backed by anything except for bitterness of people pointing their fingers and blaming Whites for wrongs, I might have been able to have a clear view of the point that was attempted. It was made to seem like none of the things people have ever said about whites and racism could ever be true--they have no merit other than unsuccessful races trying to find a scapegoat for their inadequacies. But I will tell you, that though you may be right that not all the failures of blacks have a white cause, history sure as you and I exist shows that they helped it along quite nicely. There is no eqality between white and non-white racism: one is ideological and the latter, more likely than not, experienced-based. Try in the future, to write an essay unbiased by your bitterness and denials--try the facts! ---------------------

| Try writting an essay based on the facts!!! Contrary to your outrageous claim that 95 percent of the 800,000 immigrants coming into the country are non-white, the truth really, is that the figure is more like 79 percent. Do me a favor and visit the certified INS website and see for yourself. You are blind by your own bitter biases, thus preventing you to write a decent commentary. Get rid of your own biased inhibitions, by doing so, you might learn what it is to be an American. | |

| It's funny how I found this same essay on the David Duke webpage. Give it a different context and the meaning becomes a little more obvious, eh? | |

| This essay is drastically exagerated in many aspects. To simply say every non-white failure is seen as white racism is an over statment. Many people of minorities end up on welfare or on the streets homeless do to white racism, however that is not at all to say every time a person of a minority get's in trouble with the law or with drugs it is a white person's fault. | |

I thought that paper was the product of pure ignorance. First of all what are you basing your work on?? My high school has a Black Student Union in which we have at least 1/2 of the students in it are white or another race. why you might ask...? because the school board thinks that it is racist to have a group of only black students. Eventhough, most of us arent even fully black we are multi-racial (half-black, half-white), however, when people see us they see us as black. So, next time when you write a paper try to base it on fact and not your own ignorant opinion. Because if i a 17 year old high school senior am more capable of writing a factual paper then you have some major issues. Espcially when you are trying to defend racism. It is people like you that cause america to stand divided. Sean

| I think that I should point something out to you, NASCAR is 99.9% if not 100% white,to my knowledge, they are not normally considered racist. Also, Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina is a historically black university, but has had plenty of non-African American students apply, and attend. Furthermore, I am a white male of Irish descent, and when I show my pride at this, I am not considered a racist by anyone in my high school, which has a very large minority of white students. So I agree with Preston and jen15 when I say that you seem ignorant and that you are exaggerating extremely. | |

| I believe NewmanC hit it right on the head in his review. Still i would like to point out a couple things. I am not quite sure if this essay is as skewed and illogical due to mere ignorance by its author or if it was fueled by racism out of bitterness. I will give the writer the benefit of doubt that he/she is ignorant because if it is racism, i would not waste my time. The two main arguments seem to be that A: The black social standing should not be attributed to white racism and B. In not so many words, the white race is now disadvantaged because of affirmative action, and reverse racism. I could write about the illogical conclusions in a number of essays myself, as they are most absurd, but very quickly, i wish to make a couple points. The inferior social standing of blacks in America is due to the discriminatory practices that date back to as few as 35 years ago. That is nothing but a baby step in history, and it is either foolish, ignorant or racist to propose that the effects of past discriminatory practices and slavery that had placed them into an inferior position do not remain as THE reason for today's conditions. Additionally, the white populace, particularly white males still receive preferential treatment in receiving jobs, any statistical data will back up that claim of mine...and just for good measure... affirmative action attempts to even the playing ground, and is caused by an attempt at INCLUSION, while discrimination had always been rooted in EXCLUSION. | |

| I really enjoyed your essay. i think as well that you hit right on the head with that. i agree with everything you put in there. if there is a BET channel why can't there be a WET channel...cause it's racist is why...(that's what they think) they have the in the oscars a separate one for black people granted lots of black people haven't won oscars, but some have, so if we had an all white oscars that would be racist. i think it's funny that if a black person calls us a cracker, we're like whatever, and blow it off, but if we call them the N word they get all in a frenzy and want to go call jessie jackson...just a bunch of crap, and way to go on your essay | |

This is exactly what I would have written on this topic. It is the truth, and I commend you on speaking it so effectively. Why is it okay for a@#holes like Chris Rock to constantly make fun of whites on BET yet I would be a flaming racist for making one little "nigger joke"? I think pedge has his head up his a**. Pedge, you sound like Jesse Jackson. Companies DO NOT show preference to whites. That is a black racist LIE and you sir are helping to poison race relations by posting garbage like that. The truth is that a large proportion of blacks are very uneducated and unqualified to hold high positions. Also, white oppression on blacks ended A LONG time ago. Their current problems do not stem from their ancestors being held as slaves. What a cop out. If the blacks in America today really want to climb the social and economic ladder, they will have to suck it up and quit whining about being discriminated against. They need to stop demanding affirmative action. They need to stop blaming "the white man" for every single one of their problems. And if writing this reply brands me as being racist, then I must be and I am proud to be so. ---------------------

"Contrary to your outrageous claim that 95 percent of the 800,000 immigrants coming into the country are non-white, the truth really, is that the figure is more like 79 percent. Do me a favor and visit the certified INS website and see for yourself." Oh, well that makes all the difference, doesn't it? The fact remains that nearly every single civil rights group or legislation is geared toward helping minorities. Sort of makes you wonder whether they're helping black, hispanic, asian et al. culture, or merely tearing down white culture to level the playing field? Oh, and I'm white. If I weren't, I guess I'd also be mad to have my crutches kicked out from under me. I was called a racist nearly every day when I lived in the city. You know why? I'm white, most of them were black. Yet, I'm the racist, yeah.

I give the essay a 4 out of 5 stars, it hit almost all the points except for one thing that seperates races most of the time... education. Education is why the majority of black people are living in poverty or pretty close to poverty, because they don’t try or don’t put school as a priority. Racism is not a problem with the blacks in America, its their education, its not because they’re stupid, but because they don’t put education as a priority, that’s the reason why a lot of them live so poorly. In terms of the public system, i think there's very very very little racism in the public system in America. A black man has the same rights as a white man, period. Except for affirmative action which is a whole 'nother topic.

America is built on lies and deciet. It's the truth and I am not saying this out of hatred for America. Some Whites have been tricked into thinking their race is superior than others. For example, Social Darwinism emerged in the 1850's when Charles Darwin published "Social Darwinism: of the species 1859." Then the famous phrase "survival of the fittest" also emerged tricking people into think that one race is superior than another. I am not saying it is wrong to perfer your own race, but don't say that because whites like white people it's a reason why people feel they are racist. But if the shoe fits wear it. Oh yeah, i abhor the word "nigger". Everybody says we are pulling the "race card" and people who don't see that there is racism still in America are blind to that fact. People try to paint America as being free and equaltiy for all, but it is not. It's a hyprocritcal nation, point blank. Lord Worm, now your posting is garbage. Yeah many African-Americans are uneducated and "un-qualified" as you say, but education for young black children is poor. The schools they attend don't have half the materials white schools have. Plus, funding is extremely poor. Take these stupid standardization tests kids gotta take, for example, black children's schools are very inadequately prepared for these tests and that is the reason why scores are so low in this group. Blacks are not lazy and we are trying to "suck it up" but people like you always tear us down. Yeah and your racist and i defintely know your proud to be one. Blacks are discriminated against and especially in the workforce! Your not black but i am, so it's extremely easy for you to say we are "whiners" because your not black. Step in our shoes one day and you probably couldn't deal with the things blacks have to deal with on a daily basis and I hope you read this. i agree with Pedge.Good Job

| I disagree that America was "built on lies and deceit". I believe that America has a very religious background. But that's a totally different discussion! I am very glad that I found this essay; I have been very interested in this issue ever since I was accused of being racist a few months ago, and I have found very few documents like this. The majority of the articles I found took the side of the blacks; they only showed one side to the story. So thank you! | |

I have to give this essay A+ marks for expressing the sentiment of many people. I think all individuals have different perspectives, as well as often idendifying with a larger cultural perspective at times. I don't believe this essay expresses the complete truth of the matter, but it does clearly express a perspective on the matter. This is an extreme perspective, but yet logical. Given the viewpoint, I believe it makes a lot of sense. I'm not saying that the viewpoint is white, but rather it is a particular view on the issues. The truth is that I know many non-whites that would agree to some extent. I know many non-whites that would call it racist as well. I think the essay is honest and logical, but I would like to hear the interpretation of other factors involved in the whole problem. First is the reality of a racial divide. Right and wrong is not the issue. The fact that there is a divide is the issue. How do we deal with it? It is a problem. It is obvious that there is tension brewing on both sides. Many blacks perceive that whites are trying to hold them down, right or wrong, it is obvious that they percieve that. Many whites believe that they are the ones that are being put down, and have nothing to do with the failure of blacks in American society. What can we do about that? Is there a way to come to an understanding? Is it possible that some blacks are discriminated against? Could it also be possible that some whites are discriminated against? Is it possible that some blacks are to blame for their individual failure, even the failure of other blacks? Is it possible that some whites feel superiority or hatred toward blacks still and would like to do nothing more than oppress them? I think if we are honest, we'd have to accept all these possibilities, cause if we are honest neither extreme view is absolute, but all of these play a factor in our society. The scary things is if we don't figure something out, we'll all suffer greatly. Another question concerns the reality of racism. Do we deny that atleast some of slavery, segregation, and discrimination was motivated by racial hate. I would suggest that it probably didn't start that way, but became that way in time. Was slavery more about profit or prejudice? An honest look I believe is that it was about profit, even so with the African tribes that sold other Africans, I wouldn't go so far as to say they were their own people, because they were competing tribes usually. They were looking out for themselves, not caring what happened to the fellow Africans they sold. Realizing the beginning, I can't deny the outcome either. To continue the practice of slavery, their had to be a change in thinking. Who could treat another human being that way? That is assuming that those reading this consider other skin tones fellow humans. How do you do it? You have to convince yourself and others that they are less than human. American history points to that when blacks were only considered 3/5 of a person when it came to determining congressional seats and voting. Is it possible that this mentality has not completely been dissolved? Could it also be possible that the attitudes and actions of some black people could contribute to such a continued view? One can look at the statistics of poverty, crime, education, etc... and assess the aptitude of black people, but one can also look at them and assess the affects of slavery, segregation, and discrimination on these people. Is it not the great question of psychology: genetics vs. environment? Could both have played and continue to play a factor in the development or lack thereof the black people group. Another question is, what factor does economics play? Is it not true that the economic divide follows a relatively stable pattern - the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The honest person has to admit though, that there is the possibility for any poor person to get rich and any rich person to become poor. Yet, in general it takes money to make money. Try this example, what if Billy, Bobby, and Buddy are all going to play Monopoly but Bobby and Buddy say that Billy doesn't get to start out with any money. What are the chances that Billy is going to succeed at the game? Isn't that what we did to black people? We enslaved them, with the help of other African persons, but when the nation as a whole, atleast the ones that won the war, decided to free them, we never evened out the playing field. Is the game really equal, if we simply play by equal rules but don't start with equal assets? The honest person would have to say no. Furthermore, Billy, meaning slaves, hadn't even had the rules explained to him, nor could he read the rulebook since we only taught him how to do what we say, and forbid him to learn to read. Wouldn't the honest person say that there really isn't any equality in this situation. What would the honest person say about justice? If I raped your child for four years without mercy, would you call it justice if when I got caught, or turned myself in, that the judge said "your right, you were wrong, I forbid you to ever do that again and I'm going to be watching to make sure you don't." Is that justice, even if the judge watches me, and makes sure I never do it again, but doesn't execute any other consequences. Even if I never do it again, is it fair to the little child? Would the honest person say that the 4 years of rape would not affect the child for the rest of their life, even though they might overcome many of those effects? Would the honest person say that 400 years of slavery and oppression could have no affect on the culture subject to it? Or, that there should be no justice? Is it also fair to say that it is hardly realistic to think this evil could be atoned for? But does the complexity or vast nature justify no attempts? Along this line, if it was a wrong done socially or nationally, should the retribution be expected from the whole of society or nation? When we speak of America? Does it belong to the European immigrants? Or, does it belong to some other immegrants? Does it belong to the people that were here first, ie the Native Americans? When does it become one groups nation? It isn't really to say that it belongs to the white people, unless might is right? Does our own history not say how we swindled the natives out of the lands, because they didn't believe you could own it? Does it make us better, because we were smart enough to trick them out of their land? Or, would some say that we were wrong for doing so? If I could con you out of the deed for your house, would that make it right because you let yourself be conned? Would it make it right for me to live in your dad's house, knowing that my dad conned him out of it, or even took it from him by force? It is complicated, but wouldn't the honest person say that we are living on stolen lands? Would the honest person say that the wealth of the south was built on stolen labor? Does it make it OK because our ancestor's had the power to do so? Would it be OK today if I had the power to force you to work for me and never pay you? Or, sell your children to the highest bidder, because you didn't have the power, will-power, or know-how to stop me? If the honest person accepts any of these things as true, wouldn't he/she have to accept that it is OK if these things happened to them on a small scale, or a national scale? The honest person would have to accept it as alright, because they allowed it to happen right? Or, do we believe in some sense of fairness and justice? I'm not saying that I have the answers, I'm just saying the answers aren't as "black and white" as we sometimes paint them. I would love to continue dialogue on the problem and possible steps to a united America. The truth is if we continue be as divided as we are, we may end up in a bigger dilemma than we already have.

That's why I love being black. I can make fun of every race out there and no one will say anything back to me. Except Hispanics, but I can rock a Hispanic in racial jokes any day.

I'd have to agree with ya there. i live in socal (southern california), also known as New New Mexico (or just mexifornia). And at least half the people here are mexican. But my point is, no matter what happens, they never have to worry about anything because they can play the Racist card- they point a finger at you and all of a sudden you're the enemy. Also, michaelb... America has tried to forget its past. Hatred runs deep in us all, and it has not entirely subsided, nor will it ever. But what would you have us do? Become slaves for the blacks, mexicans, and asians for two hundred years?

There has been nothing to atone for for thirty years at least, more in some places where we put our differences aside earlier, less in others where the families' blood still boils with anger and hatred. Would you have us make up for our ancestors' wrongs to those we have never wronged? This is probably the most difficult problem in the U.S. today. But I'll be honest- as pointed out by locke- racism is little more than an endless fountain of jokes in this generation.

| It is people like you who keep racism alive in America. To battle racism you need understanding, and it is clear that you are taking the easy way out. Historical Black Colleges were originally started because blacks were not allowed in white colleges. But still, they allow white students to enroll today. I find it amazing that you didn't even mention the way Africans were introduced to America when talking about the problems of today. Obviously, slavery in this country's history cannot be ignored. If you and your people were brought into a foreign land and treated like animals, do you really think you would see the country in the same light as the people that brought you there? Would you respect a country that allowed for your predecessors to be sold as tools for labor? In the south, some black soldiers coming home from World War I were lynched, stil in their uniforms. These were men that fought for our country. In America, whites and blacks weren't given the same starting line. So of course things wouldn't be equal today. Whoever wrote this paper is making no attempts for bettering our society (apparent through their capitalization of "Whites" but not "blacks") and needs to re-evaluate themselves. If you write about something without an understanding of its origins or background, you can sound incredibly ignorant and downright mindless. | |

| I wonder should anyone feel remorse for anything that they didn't do, even if we benefit. If I need a car, and my friend steals yours. So what, I didn't do it. What if I sold that car and got a new one? I can't give him my new car, it isn't even the car that was stolen. What if my grandfather stole a car from your grandfather and used it to start a business and become a millionaire and setting his descendants on the fast track to riches. Why should I feel remorse that the very comfort and luxury I feel was at the expense of your grandfather and what he possibly could have handed down to you. "Become slaves," karnivus, that is not what I would have us do, but in the same light, should we do nothing? Should we not even say we care? Could we say we are sorry? Could we actually be sorry for what happened? Are we sorry for any tragedy that happens in human history? Or, just the ones that affect us as individuals? Sadly to say, I would love to live in a place where race and racism isn't a problem. I've seen racism everywhere I've lived, no matter in small towns, suburbs, or the city. We may not always recognize it, but racism is alive and well. Or should I say hate of people different than us, whether it be color, nationality, dress, religion, or sexual preference. | |

Exceptional description of the "race card" being played out in America today by non-White ethnic groups. Thank you for describing the issue so well. I have long believed that racism does not exist in America. Only ignorance exists. So many people throw out the term "racist" when someone does not agree with their way of thinking, or potentially points out their flaws. Fact is, this is a free country and regardless of your skin color, anyone has the right and ability to pursue all educational, social and political avenues in their lifetime. If not, then why are their so many professional Blacks? It is not Whites hindering other ethic groups, they are hindering themselves. I am a firm believer in judging someone by their character and not by their color and I'm good at it too; but when I see a minority demanding something is due to them because of their color, well, I have serious issues with that. NO ONE is owed anything in America. This is a free Nation. We all chose to live here, work here and strive here. America was built on the foundation of working hard and paving your own way. Our ancestors of this great nation did not give, nor receive handouts and they are the ones whose broke backs and sweat that we have prospered from. I owe no one nothing. I did not bring anyone over on a ship and I do not think that someone's ancestry consisting of slavery entitles you anything more than any other American. The focus of America should be on it's children and it's elderly. One of my hero's is Martin Luther King, Jr. A man of such great moral character and such kindness; I often wonder what he would think of his people today? Do you think he would be ashamed? Would he cry? I'm not sure, but I am sure that his fundamental teaching was not hate or bigotry and that is exactly what is being displayed across America today by it's Black leaders. If White people had someone such as Jesse Jackson leading our movement, we would be ostricized and rebuked! Jesse Jackson is just adding to the thinking of African American's that they are less, when in fact, we are all equal. Every American has equality here. I refuse to be called a racist because I stand up for my thoughts and beliefs. It's high time this Nation stopped the nonsense of bigotry against all races. It is the land of the free and not the land of the bigotrist. I refuse to think that any nationality is deprived of rights here in this wonderful Country. It is no longer acceptable to continue and point fingers. It is high time that all races assumed responsibility for their actions and move on.

michaelb is on the right track. This is an extremely complicated subject that I have studied on extensively. The history of racism in America is based upon all of its systems and institutions being established to preserve the power of white people of Europian decsent. If you don't believe me I can cite several sources that will back my position. Just to name a couple: "A History of the United States" a book by Harold Zinn, and "Chronology on the History of Slavery and Racism", a website by Eddie Becker. Although white people do not realize it, we are the beneficiaries of "white privilege" which enables us to go about our everyday lives in relative ease. Here are a few points to describe the privilege I am describing: (simple, everyday things most white people take for granted) 1. When you walk through a store, are you followed to make sure you won't steal anything? 2. When you drive through an affluent section of the city late at night, do you fear being pulled over by the police? 3. If you were to buy a house, would you be sure that your realtor would show you all of the houses in the price range that you wanted, regardless of the part of the city? 4. If you were to adopt a child, would you be able to adopt any of the children that the agency represented? 5. Here is a real simple one: When you buy a Band-aid, what color is it? 6. Here is the kicker: Do you deal with racism every day, or just when it is convenient for you? I have been witness to several instances of discrimination based on skin color in regards to these circumstances. Non-white people live with racism every day, not just when they decide that it is an issue they need to work on. As a white person I have the luxury of deciding if I want to address the problem of racism and whether or not I would choose to do anything that is in my power to correct it. There is a history of laws and regulations that put non-whites (particularly african-americans) at a distinct disadvantage socially and economically. That is not to say that we of this generation are responsible for the sins of our forefathers, but that we should recognize the inherent disadvantage of non-whites and the advantage both socially and economically that we have as white people and we should view the situation accordingly. A little bit of empathy goes a long ways in dealing with this subject. Knowing our history and the effects it has had on people of color gives us an opportunity to begin a dialog that may lead to a closer understanding of the problem of racism in our society. There is not an "easy fix" to this problem, but knowing facts and a willingness to listen as opposed to spouting diatribe will lead to reconciliation of people of all races who wish to live together in harmony. I am willing to discuss my views and experience on this subject with all interested parties. You can contact me at dljeltema@yahoo.com.

| I understand your points about whites being viewed as rascist if they start their own self preservation groups but to put it honestly it would be dumb to form those groups. America was built on the backs of Black slaves and the children of slaves. America has a systemic hatred of Blacks. To get less than 25 percent of the opportunities presented to white america we need some form of organization to give us the support we need to succeed. White America is responsible for the failure of the Black family, Black business, Black education and the criminal perception of the Black Man. Don't be deceived to think that Black failure is not a white issue. Research your questions and you will find the answers. | |

| I thought the essay was great. It discussed topics that most are afraid to touch upon because of fear of being called a "racist". When whites talk about not being treated fairly, or talk against affirmative action they are looked at as hating minorities. Whenever I am talking with my friends, whether they are hispanic, black, asian or whatever and the topic of racism comes up sometimes it gets a little heated, but you know what they always say? Your white, you will always be racist, we can't because we are minorities and when you are the minority you can never be the evil one. If that's not a racist comment I don't know what is. America was not built on the back of black slaves, it was built upon the great minds in the north that brought us machinery which improved production and distribution. Get off the slave kick already! | |

In response to TSULLYOO...Incredibly ignorant and downright mindless. Whites were not the only ones who owned slaves. In the late Antebellum period 4,000 Free Blacks owned slaves. By 1860 only 2.7% of Southern Slave holders owned more than 50 slaves and only .1% owned 200 or more. These 2.8% of Whites owned a quarter of all the slaves in the South with only 25-30% of Southern White Families owning slaves. Blacks were not the only ones who had it rough in the "New World". The Irish may have come here of their own free will, but many never made it through the first winter. They were highly disliked by the British; couldn't find jobs or shelter, so many starved or froze to death. Do you honestly feel it is O.K. to continually condemn an entire ethnic group for slavery? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Abe Lincoln white? My ancestors were Irish, but you don't here many "Irish-Americans" complaining that the "British-Americans" treated us poorly and therefore we can't achieve anything in life. I'm poor and it's the British's fault! Get real! The bottom line is that I partied my way through 25 years of my life and it wasn't until I got off my ass, gave up drugs and drinking, paid off my debts and went back to school that my life improved. Can't blame anyone but myself and it is the same for low income blacks, hispanics, etc... SUGARFLUX said it best. The time has come and gone to stop making excuses, stop judging entire ethnic groups as a whole and start judging individuals based on how they live their lives. Bravo SUGARFLUX. --------------------- Brenda Helms

All I've got to say is bravo! I agree so much with everything you said in that essay. I'm not American but I come from a country in which this exact thing happens as well. I come from Uruguay (which is in South America, just in case some don't know). You're probably thinking "South America? Aren't people from there Latin?" Well, not in Uruguay where 88% of its people are directly White descendant. The rest of that percentage is non-White, that is or either Black or Indian-White mixed. All these minorities have their own special associations like OAU (Organizacion Afro-Uruguaya -> African-Uruguayan Organization) equivalent to the NAACP. They celebrate openly their African heritage and they're even attempting to force the government to pass a law which celebrates the diversity. Every other associaion of these kind, but White, is outlawed. The leaders of the Association of Italian Descendants were almost imprisoned for trying to celebrate their heritage (heritage that I myself have, as half of the Whites in this country). Other example of this in Uruguay happens daily at schools. White students have to be very careful when they refer to a Non-White person that's being studied. I remember clearly when a student didn't know who Martin Luther King Jr. was and he asked "is he that black guy in America that fought for the rights of the blacks?" and silence fell, people couldn't believe that he addressed a person as "black". Insults to Non-Whites happen daily, but God forbid if a White calls a Black person "nigger" There are two well-known Black neighborhoods in Montevideo (Capital City of Uruguay) those are Barrio Sur and Palermo. You probably can imagine what would happen if a White goes there. Stares, hostility, even he might be shot. But if a Black goes to a White neighborhood, don't you even look at him, as you might go to jail for discriminating. As you can see, this doesn't happen only in America and not only White Americans are victims of this.

Poorly conceived and inaccurate! If there was a negative rating I could give this peice I would. Leave it to the last poster to go off topic. The essay is Racism in America! A subject you would expect an Irishman to know all about considering the Racism endured by the Irish in Europe. Irish were called inside out Blacks, and Blacks were called smoked Irish. Might I suggest a book written by famed Irish novelist "How the Irish turned White" Which leads me to a few notations. Racism is the elephant in the room in which no one wants to acknowledge. Just recently in the Tennessee senatorial election Rep. Henry Ford Jr. was the subject of a blatantly racist ad with a white woman saying "call me" To the point, when racism is considered it is rarely addressed factually. Disparities such as the governments reaction time to Katrina as well as the mislabeling of survivors scavenging for food. I recall a photograph of a black woman behind a white family that have just ransacked a super market for supplies and groceries. One was labeled as "Scavenging" while the black woman was labeled a "Looter". Curious, considering they were both doing the same thing and were both caught leaving the same business. By the way the evil "looter" had Diapers and Baby Formula. Two Facts on Institutional Racism, 1. In 1935 Congress passed Social Security Act, guarunteeing an income for millions of Americans workers after retirment. However, the act excluded Domestic and Agricultural workers, many of whom were minorities. Mexican, African-American, Asian Americans. These workers were denied a basic source of retirement fundage, crippling them from saving, accumulating and passing wealth to future generations. 2. The US property appraisal system created in the 1930's tied property to the eligibility of government bank loans to RACE. Thus all white neighborhoods received the governments highest property value ratings and its subsequent loan capacity. Between 1935 AND 1962 less than 2% of government subsidized housing went to NON WHITE persons. Proving who were The true Welfare Kings and Queens. The oldest human remains were found in Africa, and it is a scientific fact that human kind originated in this country and it is rarely taught in schools. If you are a religous believer, the BIBLE states we are born of one man and one woman, yet there are those that claim racial segregation. Individuals applying for job are 50% percent less likely to be hired if they have a minority sounding name,no matter their experience or educational level. A 2003 hiring study conducted by Havard and University of Chicago researchers have found. Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan.

Have you forgotten History? Calling a black person by the "N" word is more racist than calling a white person by cracker or anything because of the "N" world relating to slavery in the old colonial days. If the black were the ones to own whites during those times and they used the word cracker every time they call their slaves than the social view of today would be changed. --------------------- Power Pacman

We all come at an issue with different moral values, beliefs, experiences, and predjudices and are therefore subjective by nature, some times we tend to overgeneralize based on these factors, which I might add, have witnessed over and over in the differrent comments. Wouldn't it be nice for things to be as simple as our minds, if they were we would be living in Elisum or some utopic heaven on earth. I would use caution making broad generalizations, because they are rarely if ever true. All birds are not crows. Yes, minorities aren't hired based on their race, but then again...they are(affirmative action), it all depends on who is doing the hiring I suppose. I think there is truth in both sides of the argument and we are so busy focusing our opponents percieved "cognitive inferiority", that we miss the truth in what is being said. That, percieved inferiority is the product of ignorance and the perpetrator of racism, and we are all ignorant untill we are willing take a look through each others eyes, only then can we understand, only then can we change the way things are. Until then, all we are doing it talking and I have heard enough...

While I completely agree with the suggestion that people of all races are responsible for their circumstance, I have one caveat. People of all races are responsible for their own circumstance when they are playing on a level field. Unfortunately the playing field we call America is no where near level for people of color, non-christians, women, people over forty, overweight people, short people, people with disabilities, homosexuals and list goes on. I think that racism is alive and well in america (as is many other ism's) and it is unfortunate. I do agree that racism goes both ways and all hate is wrong, however when one group of people have a large portion of the control, the impact of that racism is unequal. I think calling people who have victimized by one particular race for hundreds of years racist is like calling female rape victims man haters. I am not comparing the inequitable school systems, unfair employment practices, frequent traffic stops, armed & ready to kill border patrol, defaced of synagogues and Moques, bombed women and children, terror watch lists, phone tapping, regentrification, and this list goes on, to the personal brutality of rape, but I am sure you see my point. Rape victims have an organization called RAINN to help the grow strong and persevere, but would any one stand for rapist forming Ilikevictimizingwomen.org to further the advancement rapist, I think not. You have to view things in reality and not through your rose colored glasses or perhaps those are white washed blinders. The fact is that racism in america is not a black/white issue, it is an issue of control and inequality. I rate this essay with 5 stars as it demonstrates why we still have so far to go in understatding and equitable treatment for all people. Thank you for the article.

I love how so many people people here rate essays on opinion of what the essay says not actually on the writing quality of the essay... I agree with many points here. It seems racism plays a bigger role than it should. When someone is wronged, people will now find some sort of minority that they fit into and blaim it on that, screaming "Hate crime!" It seems there are no longer any arguments or disagreements based on personality.... Ironically, whn pople do this and blame everything on some sort of racism or predjudism, it actually advances racism. The fact is, no one will ever be equal a much as we try. because even when we do, we try to make things "more equal" than they are. (i.e. work quotas for minorities, women, etc.) This just causes more animosity and more problems. All we can do is work towards it. And I have a prediction to make if Obama does not become president: People will blaim it on racism. Whether it is or not, this will unfortunatly be the case,

Haha I felt a need to quote this comment: "Contrary to your outrageous claim that 95 percent of the 800,000 immigrants coming into the country are non-white, the truth really, is that the figure is more like 79 percent." Wow...16%... BIG difference. especially when its still abou 80% which is anything but proportional. Oh but it gets worse... maybe you should quote the essay writer right here: "Our current immigration policies are structured so that approximately 90 percent of our annual 800,000 legal immigrants are non-White." So in fact, its an 11% difference! And statistica vary obviously...

scoobysnack, the fact that NASCAR has less non-white racers has nothing to do with them rejecting black racers. Perhaps its just not a sport that appeals to blacks as much (why would it be when there is a bigger importance of cars in the Western world). This statement would be as ignorant as saying there should be more white people in basketball. Do not forget how culture affects actoivities jljeletma, i have a few problems with ur list. I can identify with many of them as a white person. Furthermore, especially on teh first one! I am a 16 year old male; thus i am followed bcuz ppl my age are more likely to steal. Unfortuneately, when it comes to crime, black people are more likely to steal too. There is a bit of truth to all stereoypes. As a teen, i try to go against all my stereotypes by ebing a law abiding citizen, and im not afriard to talk to strangers instead of ylling curse words as some teens. Unfortuneately, there's minorities that do this too, but like in my case, its the others that choose to entertain the sterotype who ruin it for everyone. However, it seems they dont care.

| As a black woman from Texas, I have experienced racism/hatred ever since I could remember. The first time I was called a "nigger" I was about nine or ten years old and I was in Paris, Tx visiting my grandmother for the summer. I had went into a restaurant with my aunt and mother and there was a white man dining at a nearby table with his wife or whomever who looked me dead in my brown eyes when I looked his way and called me a "dead nigger". I wasn't really suprised when he made the statement because I knew how racist Paris, Tx was so it didn't come as a shocker to me. But close to twenty years later, I recognize and realize that I was called a nigger not b/c of anything that I had actually done(robbing, stealing, killing and I was nowhere close to poor)but b/c of this person's ignorance. There are huge issues in the black community with education, health, crime, etc, but it doesn't matter what race you are you have to understand that YOU are responsible for your own actions. For your own success and your own failure. Blacks need to stop blaming whites and whites need to stop blaming blacks. Start pointing the finger at YOURSELF and ask the question what can I DO to make this thing better, what can I DO to become a better person. There are countless times when me and my family walk into some places and I can feel the eyes of hatred wondering upon me and my black children. Is it b/c we've stolen anything? NO. Those people didn't know us from a can of paint, they automatically assume that b/c I'm black, I'm going to be a problem. And yes it goes both ways. But since becoming a born again Christian, everyday that I pray I ask God to let me examine MYSELF. And when I started doing that, it made it easier for me to ignore the mean glares and stares of a lot of white people b/c I know who I am and who I belong to. I hold my head up high and I smile b/c I have every reason to do so. I'm black and I'm beautiful. I love the Lord and so do my children and in spite of all the things that Black women go through, if I had a chance to do it all over again, I would still chose to be a BLACK woman. So many times white people get caught up in what black people can do but what they can't, but there's a lot of things that whites can get away with but blacks can't as well. But when you're focused on your goals and handling your business, you begin to realize that you can do whatever your heart desires. | |

| I hate to say this, but I agree you you almost entirley. Having spent the last 20 years living in the southwest, close to Mexico, I have seen how almost everything you said, was true. I'm afraid this country could someday walk down the same road Germany walked down. Hitler not only hated the Jews, he hated anyone non-white. I used to wonder how he was able to get a whole country behind him. Now I know. The only thing that can save this country is a return to the beliefs of our founding fathers. (Guess you'll have to dust off your history books). Otherwise, I'm afraid we're destinded to become embroiled in years of race wars, with each race vying for control it's own territory. It's interesting, only the Native American Indians are allowed to own their own land, which no other peoples other than Native Americans can own. Maybe we should just split the U.S. into 4 sections and give each race it's own section. | |

Whats really disturbing is how the thinking of one person, who has yet touched on the subject that this country, land, belongs to noone. Racism has not only affected African Americans but also, native americans, hispanics, and every other non-white race there is at the hands mainly by whites, and for the racist on the board to actually just make it a black thing is crazy. How many whites have had people of other nations working in their homes, businesses, sweat shops illegally. And they call black people lazy, wow this is funny. Everyone of us is guilty of racism in some form or fashion, but does that solve the problem, NO, I didn't think so. The problem at hand is where do we go from here, how do we recitify it? Do we just keep bitchin about it since we all are guilty. Yes all of us are guilty in some form. Do we start all over, how could we? we can't you have to start from self, if it makes you happy to be a racist and continue to dwell on another race then it sounds like you have your own personal demons to deal with but if you are a person who feels as though it needs to be stopped then start with self and home, we all have family members who are prejudiced, enlighten them of how much it hurts not only others but humankind. from my point of view i think that this essay needs more facts. i dont know much of history but i do know that the united states is know as a melting pot of differnt races. the united states was created by immagrints. im mexican, and let me tell you that i would love to see "white" people in where im from. but they only go to the beaches. ive also heard "white" people critized our water. not trying to be rude but i dont think that you would last a month in mexico. you should do your reaserch better because in mexico everyone learns english. privite schools teach from kindergarten and public schools teach from 7th gread. i have white frineds and they dont mind if i call them white. im sorry to say but there is a lot of bitterness and ingnoance in this essay. i just here a lot of opions not historical facts.
